Dodge Ram 1500 Trucks | Vans

DESCRIPTION

The Ram 1500 is the full-size Dodge half-ton pickup that is redesigned for 2009 with aggressive style now expected from the Ram but in a more aerodynamic package. The new design includes a body-mounted grille that is canted forward, an all-new aluminum hood with more pronounced power bulge, large headlights that flow back into the front fenders, a front air dam that is fully integrated with the front bumper and a rear spoiler integrated into the tailgate.

Strength:

Looks nice. Plenty of power for a half-ton pick-up. Easy to work on unlike some imports. A reasonable amount of problems. 4-wheel drive is just a arms reach away, great for the Northwest's icy roads. Still runs great after six years and 58000 miles. Sound system is loud enough unless you want hearing loss. Interior is nice and not falling apart.

Weakness:

Trucks use a lot of gas. I got 19 miles per gallon on the highway when it was new but now it gets 17 on the highway, 13 in the city, and 15 for average driving. Not big enough to pull large trailers. If you want to haul large loads, get a three-quarter ton or higher with diesel engine. Passenger window switch stopped working at 20000 miles, replaced under warranty without any hassles. About five recalls that were all remedied by Chrysler at no charge or hassles. Check engine light came on at 55550 miles, cost me $150 for a diagnostic check and "FLADH program update" no problems since. The front brakes have been warped since it was new, but not bad enough for me to ever feel like it should be fixed. The brakes stop the truck easily but a little stronger brakes would be nice. I considered getting a aftermarket differential lock kit after getting stuck in deep snow (about three feet) for a few hours once. I suggest to other Ram drivers to shut off the overdrive when driving up long grades or pulling heavy loads. The truck rocked from side to side over rocky surfaces very badly with the stock suspension. I have an aftermarket anti-rollbar now which helps.

Dodge Ram 1500, short wheelbase, SLT Larmie Sport, 360 V-8 (5.9 liter), automatic (wish they offered manual with this engine). 58300 miles so far. I've been very happy with it. I baby it and don't carry more than it was designed to carry. The largest load I've pulled is the bed full of my personal items and a U-Haul trailer with a motorcycle behind me. I took that load over the Cascade mountains during the winter and experienced zero problems over the slick icy roads. I do most of the scheduled maintenance myself under the guidance of a Haynes manual. It is a great truck for someone who doesn't need to haul a lot of weight but needs something more than an SUV.

The Ram is my second truck. My first is a 1983 Dodge Ram 50 Sport that I still am driving after 160000 miles and a couple of engine swaps. I think the Ram will outlast that.

Strength:

Engine when not using overdrive. And obviously the looks of the truck. Too bad Mercedes didn't build the innyrds.

Weakness:

Fear of tranny going bad, avoid using overdrive except on highway. So far so good, but I always have to turn off overdrive Made in Mexico-ever seen anything of quality come out of Mexico? Rust issues, and poor build quality, glue on interior panels, blotchy plastic coloring. Again coming from Mexico what do you expect.

Love the looks of the truck, but after having it 5 years and several repairs, I think they should rename the truck to the Dodge Lamb. Though, until recently, the repairs were minor, I am now being told that the rear pinion gear/bearing(?) is going. I have had MOPAR pay for all of the other repairs well beyond my warranty. I don't let them get by with advertising quality and not following through with it. I am their worst nightmare if something goes wrong. I have had the door replaced due to rust, the steering column due to a rubbing noise, the gas gauge misread and caused me to run out of gas, steering linkage issues. Now I have them agreeing to pay for 60% of the repair job needed on the rear diff. But I am not done with them yet (I am working on a 100% free repair) Now there is rust on the bottom of my tailgate, having to dick around with them over that too. I have babied this truck like lots of others, they don't get buy with bulding crap that I have to pay for. I know the dealers just cringe when I show up, but I get my way. Stop wasting money on extended warranties. Just get really loud and ugly in front of customers and promise to spread the word via the web or whatever means, that's how I have had 2 dealerships do free work 2 years past the 3/36. Chrysler hates me for sure, they hate anyone trying to make a Toyota out of a Dodge. Be relentless and don't give up. Get ugly with them and threaten them, that's the only way to get them to cover the poor craftsmanship. I remind them that we should never have bailed them out in the 70's. Mark my words, I do take care of the truck and pay for regular service which I cannot perform myself. I don't use the overdrive on the tranny while driving around the DC metro area, only on the highway. I have not had any problems with the tranny other that the leaky gasket. I keep my engine as clean as the day it was built along with cleaning the underside. That has gone a long way in getting the free work out of Chrysler, because it shows that I have taken really good care of my truck, and I do. But from what I hear all manufacturers are building crap these days cause we let them get by with it-even Toyota. Won't start on the problems my bro is having with his 2001 Sequoia (sp?)

Strength:

Craftsmanship, appearance, $5000 less than competitors, and the looks you get at the red lights.

Weakness:

Gas guzzler, slightly underpowered in comparison to Ford and Chevy, longer than a 65 DeVille.

2002 1500 QuadCab 4X4 Sport is a jaw dropping display of vehicle design. There is no other full size truck that can compare. Smooth ride, quiet interior, and surprisingly nimble for a big truck.

Strength:

Dates will think I am well endowed. I will tower over all other cars with my false sense of superiority. As I speed in my high performance truck, cars will quickly move out of the way in extreme horror and intimidation.

Weakness:

There's always a bigger truck. The slow realization that trucks are ugly, slow, and have no performance whatsoever.

What's with all these people in orange county getting gigantic pickup trucks? These orange countians who live in the middle of suburbia and have office jobs feel the need to compensate for their small wangs. Yes, I think i'll raise my truck 6 feet off the ground, it makes loading cargo in the bed so much easier! These huntington beach roads can get pretty rough sometimes!

Strength:

5.9 engine has a lot of power, Looks great, trans holding up so far.

Weakness:

gas mileage, breaks, sluggish Idle, NEEDS BIGGER TIRES. Very, very bad in the rain with 2WD.

Bought the Dodge in Sept 2000. It's a 1500 4X4 with the Off-road package, 360 5.9. Over all I am please with the truck. Looks like a truck, Drive like a truck. Only problems I have is when hitting big pot hole like we have in Chicago. You can feel something hitting under the drivers side floor board. I looked under there and can't find anything wrong. Brought it to the dealer and they cant find anything either. Also the rear end grinds when turning and excellerating. If anyone knows why this happens to the floor boards. can you email me at argent15@aol.com. Other than those 2 pain in the ass problems, that I think, (hope) are easy to fix. I love the truck. Elmhurst Dodge I would highly recommend to someone in Chiacgo if they want a Dodge, only the sales WOMAN (I know I said woman) that sold me the truck is no longer there.

Powerful magnum V8 adapts well to performance upgrades. nice ride height and ground clearance from factory but looks really intimidating with lift kit. handles well in all weather conditions. we love it. the electric blue paint draws lots of attention from onlookers and the factory aluminum wheels add the right touch of class. although the body style is dated and the 360 pushrod motor seems prehistoric, these are the very qualities that attracted me to this truck. terrific 4X4
