Strength:

Good styling and roomy cab, gas milage is ok.

Weakness:

V6 engine, gas ping, like of power.

I traded for the truck new and it now has 46,000 miles on it and has been very well taken care of. It has been back to the service department three time for the ping in the engine, and I have have talked to Chrysler about it several times on the phone. With no luck, I may add. The ping is still there. Gas mileage is about 15 in town and 20 to 21 on the highway, depending on the speed driven. The V6 is under powered for this size truck.

THIN METAL.. THAT''S IT!

ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY TRUCK! I CAN''T BELIEVE WHAT A FEW OF YOU PEOPLE ARE WRITING ABOUT THIS GORGEOUS, WELL BUILT PIECE OF WORK. I PURCHASED MY RAM IN THE FALL OF ''98 WITH 63,00K ON IT''S CLOCK. IT WAS USED AS A "WORK" TRUCK PRIOR TO MY OWNERSHIP, IT NEEDED NEW U-JOINTS IN THE FRONT AXLE AND THAT WAS ABOUT IT. (THE DEALERSHIP FIXED THAT PROBLEM) I WAS VERY SKEPTICAL ABOUT BUYING A NEWER VEHICLE AT THAT TIME, BUT MY WIFE JUST FELL IN LOVE W/ THE GOOD LOOKS AND TALKED ME INTO SNAGGING IT! SINCE THEN, I HAVE DRIVEN THE THING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY W/ NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER. I TELL YOU GUYS, THE NEW RAM IS A FULL BLOWN WINNER IN MY BOOK! OTHER THAN IT''S THIN DESIGNED SHEET METAL, THIS BABY KICKS BUTT! MOPAR OR NO CAR!!!!!

Strength:

Ride, drives great, comfortable seats and great storage for a regular cab.

Weakness:

Fuel Mileage: I have kept a log of every mile and every gallon of fuel. Worst: 11mpg pulling a 4x8'' U-haul covered trailer. Best: 17.8mpg hiway trip Advertised HP is a farse. Look at the RPM''s the engine has to be churning to achieve that HP or Torq. Run your engine up there and seize a motor, see if warrant will pay for that. NOT! I will continue to buy Mopar but never a V-6 in a full size. It was my mistake, nobody elses.

Bought new Jan 99. Rides and drives great. Paint has been great and still shines (silver). It had 3.55 gears and they whined. Had 3.92''s put in as warranty replacement. This does the trick on the under powered Sic-6. There is a program for the computer that will cut down on the up-down shifts on slight inclines. Service Dept made the change and it helps. The fitment of body parts are not what I expected. I have had 6 Mopar trucks since 1979, D-50-D350 and 1 1990 Dakota Ext cab V-6 auto. Warranty repair: Rear axle, window regulator, sensor leaked by thermostat, alignment twice.

Model Reviewed: Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 lg bed

Strength:

Great looking truck, sits high with 16" stk P265R-75 tires (bed height at 35" in rear). Have two tone paint scheme, white with driftwood middle band w/ wt. below. Usually get 17-18.5 mpg hi-way @ 60-65 mph, not towing and 13-14 in town. "Note has have 3.55:1 gear ratios". When towing boat, gas milage drops to 12-13 mpg on hiway which often includes driving over 2 mtn passes 3K & 4k high. 5.2 (318)auto, engine up to the task, but some what slow to rev. but then again this is a 5000# truck with small block and 4X4 to boot.

Weakness:

Trans seems to not know what gear to be in sometimes, brakes feel mushy, cruise control very sensitive to hills at hiway speeds, (probably due to 318 with 3.55:1 gears). If I were to tow much more wt. I would go with the 5.9 with 3.90 or 4.10 gears. Especially with the mtn'' passes here in the Northwest.

Despite the many dismal truck reviews in this site my truck has been relativley trouble free. Bought it new and now have 56K mil. on it with only minor problems (weaping trans oil cooler fittings in radiator, dealer fixed for free even though out of warrenty). Have had trans fluid and filter changed at 50K, trans seems much tighter than before. I am pleased with the room in cab as I am 6''2 and 250 lbs. I tow a 3500# boat and trlr'' in summer and a 2 pl snowmobile trailer in the winter with no problems (I don''t use Overdrive while towing).

Strength:

Good looks and great ride. No major problems.

Weakness:

Poor gas mileage, very poor. The EPA should look into false advertising. The best I ever got without a load was 15 MPG on a trip and 10 in town. Also, if you punch it the engine revs up and then nothing. You have to step of the gas and do it sloow before the trans catches up. Not goog if you are passing. A very LARGE turning radius and weak radio. The cup holder will not hold a cup if you make sharp turns.

I purchased this used with 10K miles on it and now it has 63K. I liked because of it’s styling and overall looks and based upon reputation of the newer RAM line. So I was told. The ride is great. Long trips, over 10 hours, and it felt fine. The turning radius is terrible. It is very hard to park it in some shopping areas. It can haul and pull large loads with no complaints. However the gas mileage is terrible. Have not had any mechanical problems with the engine or transmission.

Strength:

Overall, it''s a good truck! I think the material on the interior is better quality than Ford and Chevy, and I really like the cup holder that folds out of the bottom of the dash! It''s really durable and also adjustable.

Weakness:

Transmission and gearing

So far so good. The only thing I don''t like about it is the transmission. Seems to want to change gears at wierd times and doesn''t want to run smootly at 70 mph. Gearing is wierd! I just turn off the overdrive and that solved the problem. I have also received a few recall notices in the mail. One is for the air bag and the other for something in the steering.

Model Reviewed: 5.2L V8 (318) Ext. Cab. 2wd, auto trans.

Strength:

Good power for 5.2L; roomy and comfortable cab. Stylish interior I opted for the cloth seats over the leather.

Weakness:

The placement of the cup holder over the stereo is almost useless. You have to hold your cup on corners. But this has been moved to a lower spot and improved GREATLY in the newer models. Mirrors this was also fixed in later years.

I bought my truck a little over 2 years ago with 26,000 miles on it, so I still had some of the factory warranty time left. Good thing, I had some bugs in it all minor. My local dealer took good care of me though and fixed them all. But I have heard some horror stories about the same dealer. Over all I LOVE my truck. I get a lot of complements from the public about how nice it looks. I am really a stickler for detail and maintain the truck well. This truck is not a show truck either, I bought it to be used as a work truck for my home improvement business and WORK it does from hauling building supplies and tools to a job site to hauling building refuse to the local landfill, it does it all. To tell you how much I like my truck I want to share this story with you. Last December I had a wreck in this same truck. It was bad! Stopped 2 inches from a LARGE oak tree. WOW! I was hit from the front driver side all the way to the read bumper. Six Weeks, $9800.00, a new frame and lots of other stuff later I am still driving it. And it is still running good! From what I have read in these reviews I guess luck of the draw must have something to do with the RAM you get. My wife drives a Saturn and after having my truck for a two years she got up the courage to try to drive my truck. SHE also LOVED it! Now she wants one to. I have test driven Chevy Silverado and Ford F150, they just could not compare. If you have not seen the new 2002 RAM 1500, do yourself a favor and check it out, The storage space is AWSOME. I may just have to upgrade to the four door, NICE! Even with four FULLSIZE doors it still has a full 6.6 foot bed. Not like the F150 that only has a 5.6 foot bed. I do agree about the tranny shifting into high gear to easy, it can be a little bit of a pain but you get used to it. I also had some trouble with my mirrors on both sides of the truck they became really loose (poor design) it happened after warranty was gone but the dealer split the cost with me for the repair. The gas mileage is also another issue I get about 11 MPG City, 14 MPG Highway, but it is a V8 and a truck! Overall I have to say I am happy with my choice of trucks.

With over 100,000 miles on her odometer, she has been the best vehicle I''ve ever owned. Never been back to the dealer for ANYTHING other than routine maintainance. Rock solid vehicle! Looking at the 2002, but will keep the ''96, it shows no signs of breaking...no oil leaks, tranny still fine, etc
