Model Reviewed: Dodge Ram 1500 Ext. Cab 4X4

Strength:

Muscle like looks, great view of the road/visibility, very powerful, highest ground clearance for 4X4, cupholders are awesome(can accomodate 40 oz's), Good 4 wheel drive and good handling.

Weakness:

The stock tires are like bicycle tires and when you go over large dips it easily knocks itself into neutral with automatic. I'm not quite sure why they still use rear drum brakes, but they suck. They need to put on all discs.

When i first got my ram the first thing I did was put on straight pipes to increase performance and sound. The sound was incredible, I can be heard from blocks away, also I can feel the improved horsepower gain. I drive the ram rather aggresively and have only needed to replace the brakes and get the power steering replaced. The power steering was covered under the warranty and was fixed immediately at Manuel Dodge in Dallas. The brakes on the other hand were a pain. Chrysler claimed the car had been "abused" so it wouldn't cover my new brake pads at 9000 miles. I was unaware a car could be "abused" but I felt somewhat robbed on that call. Anyways the only complaint I have is the brakes. The car handles great and power of the 5.9L V8 is awesome. I can peel out in reverse indefinetly on this thug. I would recommend it to anyone.

First to mind.... The 360 5.9L.I have had six guys in my truck, 4 of which where about 6 ft./ 220 lbs., it was tight but they said it was pretty darn good. The cup holders are awesome. The interior is driver oriented for long trips, and comfort..... for a truck thats great.I have 25000 miles just two faults. This truck can be modified easily and rather cheap. It is a power house ram.Best truck I have had so far.The suspension on the 4x4 dodge trucks is unmatched by any chevy or ford.

Weakness:

The one fault was a bad left front hub assembly, which had a bur that wore out the front left axle seal twice before they figured it out.I can handle that. The paint is the second fault, with very tiny rust spots trying to show through my thin white paint between washes. Warranty time...huh?

Like I said, I travel alot and would recommend this truck to anyone who wants value, strength, power, and the looks and comfort of a sports car on steriods. I put duals and Flow masters mufflers on two months after I bought it, a K&N airfilter and some hot plugs, it is one fast truck. I also wanted the look of the offroad series 4x4 so I put a two inch taller tire with a wider and more aggressive track to take care of those nasty tail spins when wet. This truck is so maintainable I will be adding forever and loving it.Unlike the tight under the hood experience you chevy and ford owners complain about, changing the plugs takes fifteen minutes.I took the liberty of buying a 100000 mile warranty with no time expiration for $875.00 from Royal Warranties Inc. just in case, bumper to bumper coverage.I will get a custom paint job on it next year! Can't wait!!

Strength:

Looks - This truck is a real head-turner. Power is more than adequate. I purchased the truck and one month later drove it from Gulfport, MS to Seattle Washington and back via North Dakota pulling a 12' U-Haul box trailer. The truck never missed a beat through the mountains and the rear-end didn't drop a fraction of an inch with the weight on her. With or without the trailer 85 to 90 mph was no strain for this bad boy. Oh, by the way, you gotta love those adjustable cup-holders.

Weakness:

Gas mileage, but what do you expect when you buy a brute. If you want gas mileage buy a rice-burner with no balls. Seating surface fabric - Who picked this stuff out? Rainbow pok-a-dots?

Love the truck and this is my first Chrysler product. When it came down to selling my 2001 Mercedes Benz SLK 320 or selling my Ram...say good-bye to the convertible boys. The truck is MINE. I grew up in a Ford household and never really had any problems with them (I've had 20 new vehicles in my 35 years of life). The change-over factors were looks, value (I shop before I buy.) and the fact that somewhere in the 80's or 90's Ford stopped making a truck in the F-150 line-up. Compare the prices of comparable Ford, Chevy and GMC models.

For those of you that bought the Ram 4X4 with the Off Road package and the sharp 17" rims and got a 16" spare, take it back to the dealer. I did and 2 days later had a matching 17" rim and tire to put under my baby. I had to modify the spare tire lift because the center hole was too small on the 17" rim, but that was no biggy. Driving on the 16" tire can cause damage to the rear-end. I've had it back to the dealer for option add-on's, service and the tire issue and I've never been treated better by any other dealer from any other auto maker. Champion Chrysler put the local Mercedes dealership to shame on the service factor.

I recommend this vehicle to anyone that wants a truck. Whether you tow a trailer full of horses, house plants or just want to look good, my experience has been that you can't miss. I've put 15,000 miles on in 8 months and I love it. I have no complaints and I'm a tough customer.

Everyone has their own taste and expectations in what they like in a truck and what they expect it to do. Some of the guys in these profiles talk about racing, others towing and still some just use it as a commuter. Keep in mind that automobiles are machines, built by human beings and they will not be perfect. I have confidence in my local dealer that if something does go wrong, they will handle it to my satisfaction. That makes a big difference. Personally, I'm happy with my Ram and I'm planning on hanging on to this one for a while.

Weakness:

see my memo on top, too many to list again

This is got to be the worst vehicle in history. 1 week after bringing it home the transmission slipped had to get up to 45-50 mph to engage. 1 week later puffing blue smoke out the exhaust when starting it and engine knocking very loud when putting a load on it, next week lost my stereo on the right side when I hit a bump so I would have to hit another to reactivate speakers. 3 days later front suspension started to crack and shutter when making a left turn into parking spaces etc. Took to dealer they said the engine noise was the muffler vibrating and the blue smoke was nominal. All of this continued so I brought it back after calling my extended warranty company and finance co. which is chrysler. They took it to a different dodge dealer that speacializes in trucks. When I went to pick it up it started to studder one block after leaving. I returned and they said it was a missing cylinder but not sure which one and I would have to return at my cost. couple days out of the shop the oxygen sensor went, ruff driving, engine rattles, front suspension cracking again. Back to square one. Everybody loves the look but I hat to pay this kind of money for a lawn ornament. I do remodeling/maintenance and I live in my truck but I take very good care of it because it is my only vehicle also.

Power, size, height

The truck looks great, and handles great. It is a smooth ride. The stereo is great. The Quad Cab doors are wonderful, as are the cupholders andcener console.

Weakness:

Where should I start? 12 miles per gallon, I've had the truck for two years and it has been in the shop way too many times. I blew a fuse for the fog lamps, the coil wire went bad, the chip needed to be replace(somethign to do with the timing), I had some dash board lights stuck on(a wiring harness had to be replaced), the spedometer stopped working, and now the transmission is acting up(the dealer says there's no problem. The dealer I have been taking it too for service is worthless too. I've taken it there for repair because it is the only dealer close to home. They were cool at first, but after that they seemed like they didn't want to see me. They would belittle my opinions, and jerk me around. They kept my truck for 3 days and didn't even call me as they had promised to do when they had an update on it's condition, or even when it was completed. I'm presently looking for a replacement vehicle. I am not looking for another Dodge.

This truck, other that it's great looks, has been a thorn in my side since day one. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Lots of power, smooth acceleration, comfortable, easy access with the quad cab. quality stereo system and I like the adjustable cup holders. Good serivce at the dealership in Victoria BC.(Ensign) 5 Year warranty is a good deal. Love the height!!

Weakness:

Lousy gas mileage (12.5 city and 17 highway in imperial gallons). The center console inside hinges are breaking off one at a time and the dealership is having trouble getting one ( now, two months)

So far, I am pleased with the vehicle overall with only minor complaints which have been rectified by the dealership immediately. My largest complaint is with the lousy gas milage. I am presently looking for a solution to help rectify this problem(air filter, new chip set ????)so the truck is a little cheaper to run.

Great Power in the 360, Rugged truck. Looks great and runs great.

Weakness:

Gas milage blows. Dodge service, in my experience sucks the worst!!

Well.. my dakota was a lemon. New model and the brakes on the dakotas were absolutely pathetic. I've read allot of reviews on the RAM here and it sounds like lemons galour, but I don't know anyone personally that have had any problems. My RAM SPORT 4X4 has 74,000 miles on it in 4 years and runs like a champ. I am hard on my truck. I tow a heavy load and hunt allot so my truck sees all weather conditions and ground condtions, dry muggy heat, snow, mud and the woods. She handles it all. The 360 runs like a mutha! Course I only get 10mpg (man that hurts the pocket) but I got nothing bad to say about this truck. Only thing I've done to it was a tune up at 65,000 miles and a few minor service stops to take care of a few issues from an accident (some dilrod tried to pass me on the right, while I was making a right hand turn and T boned me).
For those of you that live in Tupelo Mississippi, stay away from the dodge dealer there. There service SUCKS BAD!!!
I took it in to have the door locks looked at (since accident they work most of time but sometimes cut out). When I went to pick it up, I noticed a badddd scratch down the door. Turns out the guy driving it out of the shop hit one of the concrete corner pillars and didn't tell anyone. When I went to get it after repainting it, they never buffed the door out and it was gray!!! instead of black. I had to wait there for 2 hours while they rebuffed it and I missed an important meeting with one of my clients.
Another trip I told them to check the front speaker as it had cut out..they had to go in the door anyway so I told them to look at it. They said they did and found nothing. When I got home I took the panel off myself and found that a wire had come loose from the speaker. Dilrods never checked it out and lied about it. That place needs shut down. They are clueless.
Annnnyway, I'm sorry to hear all the bad reports on the truck, but I couldnt ask for a better vehicle. Getting ready to start shopping for a 2001 extended cab 4x4 off road model. Mmmm damn sweet trucks!!!

Strength:

Heavy Duty everything, 5 spd will pull or climb anything, easy to work on, parts easy to find, great fuel economy, incredibley reliable, extremely quiet compared to newer 24 valve cummins, very masculine looking machine.

Weakness:

#1 complaint is the rough ride, my neck hurts just thinking about driving it ha ha, its not fast on the highway either. top speed about 85mph. Factory paint peels easy ... no other complaints from me.

If you can find one of these in very good condition for $15000 or less and you want a really tough reliable truck, dont hesitate to buy it because they are getting rare. And in this case ... they really dont make them like they used too. Makes driving fun !!!
