Model Reviewed: RAM2500 SLT 4x4

Strength:

Great looks, good hauling size, roomy interior, reasonable handling for 3/4T, and people love to look at it and ride in it. Good ground clearance, reasonable stopping power, and reasonable visibility given extended cab and short (6ft) bed.

Weakness:

Started as a love affair and is winding up as a pain-in-the-@ss. I enjoyed Chrysler products but no so with this one. It gave 3 years of good duty and now, everything is going south all-at-ONCE (and yep, it has been babied). Catalytic converter replaced, multiple "tune-ups", brake switch failed (and impacted transmission with 700 rpm "wander", and nonfunctioning cruise control -- go figure!), fuel pump died "unexpectedly" (this beast is the only vehicle to leave me stranded WITHOUT fair warning, middle of the night on interstate with two kids, in 31 years of owning/driving, and I even owned British-made "autos"! I have friends that have V6 GMC 4 x 4(1994) and they have had much less problems than I 9and they beat their SUVs/trucks about have!). I gone through 3 Broncos and they were getting worse each model year so I swore off FORD. Not a big GM fan, but heard nothing but good things regarding their trannies, esp. when compared to FORD or RAMs. The RAM2500 is too big for parking, too big for maneuvering (try a U-turn in four lanes!), too big to get gas mileage, too big (she's high up there Bubba) for comfortable entry unless you provide "butt boosting". I would have contended with all of these nuisances at until the failures came, by the dozen...cannot even recall how many times the cruise control has gone out or the fog lights. CD player skips like a banshee! And it is one of those oversized Chrysler units! What miffed me with all of this is that with a big, hunking RAM2500 and 5.9L I felt the horse trailer I used as much as I did when pulling it with a 94 GMC Jimmy (V6) -- go figure? Yes, the Jimmy had a stabilization tow package, and at times it slowed on the inclines vs. the RAM, but the "feeling" of towing on the level ground was not different between the two -- made me wonder (have to go look at vehicle weights and compare small SUV with large P/U). I guess I expected to feel "nothing" given the 2500 looks and size and gas mileage! And the damn Jimmy had 160,000 miles on it compared to my 65,000 miles!

I would not recommned this HD truck to someone who needs such, I think (biting tongue) that the GMC would provide better service (reliability) given all of the rumors and my many talks to truck mechanics frommany shops. Dodge could have made this a worthwhile vehicle but for a 5.9L, it is anemic except in consumming gas... and as someone else here wrote here, everytime I fire this thing up nowadays, I wonder what is going to go next. It is on the "4-sale block" hopefully beating timing with having to replace the trans. The AT is OK now, but I see the writing on the wall -- this thing is going the route the Durangos and Caravans have gone...new AT by 90,000 miles or less!

My RAM2500 did beat my 93 Bronco 4x4 though -- it had failures galore. But like the 93, I am selling this thing before "more fun" appears!

Looking to replace with Toyota's Tundra or Chevy Z71 or Tahoe/Yukon (can't believe I am going to give GM a try). RAM value better than overall just because folks like to buy RAMS ... just remember... looks are not always reflective of what is in the "inside" -- but looks do keep resale value up. i need to tow a 21 foot boat and other things, but the RAM is too much vehicle for 95% of the time, and I am not sure it is up to doing 3/4T work when it is truly called for... so bye-bye for this hulk and Dodge will have to wait another decade to see me again, if at all.... =-)

Similar Products Used:

76 F150 Ford P/U = more miles before failures came, what a pain to drive, 85 4x4 Bronco = better reliability, 1986 4x4 Bronco = less reliability, 1993 4x4 loaded Bronco = what's reliability? this last one had NO idea!!

not similar, but gives me comparison in engineering/workmanship = 74 Datsun 260Z = the benchmark! 12 years old, 200K miles, drove fabulous when sold! and many bad GM products through 70's & 80's....

Model Reviewed: ram 50 short box

Strength:

Its about as fragile as a tank. Its taken on a Cadillac, station wagon and a full grown pine tree in yellowstone and as bad as all of this sounds, it has a few small dents, as for the opponents, big, expensive dents. There is not much that can go wrong with it, as it has very few options. The gas milage is exceptional, 26+ in the city. It has always started whether its hot(98+) or cold(10-1). It has not had many repairs after 147,000 miles. Not bad for a little 4 banger.

Weakness:

No options such as power steering, fuel injection, power windows, cigarette lighter, well you get the idea. The engine is not very powerful even as far as 4 cylinders go, its a 2.0 liter. Do not attempt to take this little guy on trips requiring going up alot of steep hills, the wounderful gas milage goes to hell really quick. To change the spark plugs, you darn near need to be an acrobat as two of the plugs are way down in the engine and of course not alot of room to manuver in there. To change a headlight, the entire grille needs to be removed before anything else can be done.

Overall,if you are looking for a reliable city vehicle, this is a good truck for moving people and small appliances and furniture around without eating all the gas in sight.

Strength:

Ride Heigth is great. Main reason I bought it is for looks.

Weakness:

Paints chips in a strong wind. 318 is a weak motor. Wish I would have kept the Chevrolet, but it does look good.

The Off-Road package really does help the looks of the truck. That is what hooked me into buying the truck in the first place. I do not like the 318 motor. I have done numerous modifications, and finally got it to where it is a respectably powered motor. Overall, a good truck.

Strength:

I really love the power delivered from the 360! It is ansome truck to take off road and have on road. It is my first Dodge and I would buy another in a heart beat. Not only do they look great they are comfortable and very durable in my eyes. I love my Dodge and would not give it up for the world. It is Black and has been modified some. Some of the modifacations are, full replacement 350 lb. bumper, 3 inch lift running 33 inch Chaparels, K&N air filter with a new edelbrock modified intake, headers and dual summit 3in exaust pipes! Is that a dodge or what?

Weakness:

The only thing that gets me about my Dodge is the Transmittion. I don't liek the way it shifts when it is hot. I have noticed they are a little sluggish and preform better when they are cold. Other than that they are great!

I recomend this truck to all people who love trucks and are wanting one that will run and be the best out there! If you want style Dodge is for you! Anyone who has a problem with Dodge can Kiss my tailgate cause that is all they are going to be seeing! DODGE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice Interior For the Year, Rugged Looks, Tough Body, Great Engine and Tranny, Looks, Runs Nice. STOCK MODERN DIGITAL STEREO! 318 will not die Just Turned 100,000 and is still an excellent Truck.

Weakness:

I Backed Into My Gate so there is alot of bondo and primer on the right side of the box so it gets looks from that, The Mirrors SUCK. The 3 arm models rust out from all 3 Arms. The Door Panels Are Shot and Too Damn Expensive to get.

The 1986 POWER Ram (The Power Rams were the 4x4s) is a great truck, Good Looking and the 318 will Run Forever. If you can get one buy it!

Power Train, Styling, and Functionality. A lot of fun to drive and tows great.

Weakness:

Getting simple Warranty work done RIGHT at the dealer that I have dealt with has been a PIA. But no weaknesses with the truck itself.

I recommend it to anyone who wants a truck!!!!! Don't buy any truck just to drive around as the family car, not a good move, buy a truck if you need a truck!!!!

Model Reviewed: Dodge 1500 4x4

Strength:

The interior is very large, lots of room in ext cab model. The looks are really the only strength to me.

Weakness:

Seats too firm and very uncomfortable for someone who is tall with wide shoulders. The rear sliding window seal leaked, flooding the floorboards when it rained. Front end does not wear tires evenly, tires worn severely on outer edges after only 7k miles. Handling is poor compared to Ford F-150. This truck is not good in snow, even light snow unless you put it in 4 wheel drive mode. Biggest flaw is it seems to be cheaply designed and constructed (found out it was made in Mexico after looking at title, boo hiss!)

I would never recommend it to someone with long legs and big shoulders. For the price you can find something much more comfortable that is better quality and superior contruction.

The dealer would not fix the problem because we are the second owner of the van. When I got the van it only have 20,000 miles and after a year the paint started peeling off.

Great truck I've got 90,000 on it and have only changed the oil. Looks great and the 360 has plenty of grunt. We get alot of snow in South Dakota and this truck has no problem with it.I am planning on trading it in when it hits 100,000 and will definatly pick up anouther one.
