Best truck I ever owned, very quiet, lots of room, my paint is fine. overall the truck is great,EXCEPT FOR; THE REAR END

Weakness:

THE BIG PROBLEM IS THE REAR SEEMS LIKE CHRYSLER INSTALLED DAKOTA SIZE REARS IN A TRUCK THAT IS RATED FOR A 1800# PAYLOAD???????? OF COURSE MINE BLEW AT 44000 MI, AND I NEGLECTED TO BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY "WHICH A CHRSLER REPRESENTIVE I SPOKE TO IN REF. TO THIS PROBLEM SAID" THAT I SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED" KINDA LEAVES A BAD FEELING IN YOUR STOMACH WHEN YOU HEAR THIS.IT SURE TICKS ME OFF TO HAVE TO PAY FOR A REPAIR AND BE TOLD THAT I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER

PAID 25000 FOR THE RAM, WOULD ONLY PURCHASE ANOTHER WITH THE LONGEST WARRANTY CHYRSLER HAS TO OFFER,BECAUSE THEY HAVE SOME NASTY ENGINEERING PROBLEMS FROM THE COMMENTS I READ HERE.

Power, 5.9 V-8 Engine, Tow, smooth riding, comfortable seating. I Like Everything About It!

Weakness:

No weakness at all, it's perfect!

I paid $25,000 and it was worth every last cent. I would reccomend this truck to anyone. It's a great truck and totally puts the Chevy Silverado to shame. On a scale of one to ten, I give it an 11!

Model Reviewed: Quad cab SLT short box

Strength:

Good 4x4 capability, great clearance. Very quiet ride, even at 100KPH and better - almost no wind or road noise. Excellent interior space even for a big guy (I'm 6'6") and a great job of interior fit and finish - Dodge paid close attention to interior details like the super-sized cup holders (front and back) easy placement of controls, and very comfortable seats, especially with the 8-way power drivers seat.

Weakness:

The large centre console is very useful, but is almost impossible to put up out of the way while driving - has a habit of sticking. The rear seat in the Quad cab is not comfortable for long drives, and the back is so close to the window that occupants often knock their heads on the rear window. Windshield washer is a little too agressive - any additive in the mix ends up being frothed too much for my liking, then due to aerodynamics, the liquid is whisked away right across my line of vision on the drivers side window. The heated mirrors are a nice feature, but don't heat up fast enough to deal with anything below -20°C very well. Even with the short-box this truck can't turn in the width of a roadway - the standard box must be a nightmare. Some brake shimmy a bit in emergency stopping - possibly related to an overly agressive ABS system and no weight in the box. Horrible gas mileage, especially in city driving - highway is not too bad. Dodge hasn't upgraded their Magnum V8 engines in many years, and it shows in their efficiency.

Paid $36,000 CDN for this '99 model in December of 1998. The SLT comes with power everything and the highest trim level; we added only the heavy duty service and towing package.
The Dodge has been mechanically very reliable; there was some brake squeal until they broke in properly. An electrical short somewhere in the factory tow package caused me to burn out a number of PAL fuses (at a horrifying $8 a pop) before I got it fixed on warranty. I admit that I bought this truck based mainly on interior room: at the time there was nothing on the market that I could drive comfortably. Also the superb exterior styling sets the new Dodge apart from the competition. I'm not sure how good this truck would be for heavy work, but for my use it has been quite good.

When we were looking for a truck, we drove the GMC and Ford full-sized pickups. GMC seemed to have more get-up-and-go, but the seating position is terrible for anyone over 6' tall. The Ford was a nice ride, but the interior was very plastic looking - definitely designed for a work vehicle.

I LOVED THE LOOK OF THE DODGE WHEN THEY MADE THE STYLE CHANGE I THINK IN 92 OR 93.I HAVE 60,000 PLUS ON MY TRUCK AND HAVE HAD NO MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH IT. PULLS MY 17 1/2 FT BOAT WITH EASE .

Weakness:

EVERYONE ONE HAS PAINT PROBLEMS AND MINE HAS BEEN PAINTED TWICE AND IS FADING AGAIN. I HAVE THE V6 AND IT GETS TERRIBLE GAS MILAGE AND HAS ALWAYS RUN ROUGH. NOW THE HEAD LINER IS FALLING DOWN.HAVE TO FIGHT TO GET WORK DONE ON THE TRUCK.

I BOUGHT THE TEXAS OKLAHOMA PACKAGE AND IT WAS 15,500.OO .NO I WOULDNT RECCOMEND THE DODGE TRUCK. I AM GOING TO BUY A TRUCK SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE TO PULL A FIFTHWHEEL AND DONT KNOW WHAT I WILL BUY. WHEN YOUR OVER 65 THE LAST THING YOU NEED IS PROBLEMS WHICH NO ONE WANTS TO FIX.ALSO ON A FIXED INCOME AND CANNOT PAY THESE HIGH PRICES FOR A TRUCK THAT GET WORSE THEN AVERAGE GAS MILELAGE

Strength:

Good handling and comfortable on long trips--quad doors make it easy for
rear passengers to enter/exit--

Weakness:

Lost air conditioner twice and had rear window leaking--dealer couldn't get correct parts after two visits--Just lost entire differential after vacation trip--we don't even tow anything--It has a five speed manual transmission and shifting into second is difficult at times.

Good thing I took out extended warrantee. I have a feeling I'm going to need it after paying $20K for this fido. Lost air conditioning switches and melted down fan motors. Latest trip with rear end problems sealed its doom when I'm able to dump this problem child. I purchased this truck for its supposed high reliability. It lives up to its comfort and handling, but really surprised me with its mechanical and electrical problems.
It's a good thing I don't tow a boat or trailer. With 35,000 miles, who would have thought that all the rear end bearings, etc. would fail when driving all the mountains in Florida.

It was a great truck until thinks began to break a year after I bought it

Weakness:

I replaced the brakes twice, the transmission twice, Torque converter, Catalytic Conveter, Water Pump, Fuel Pump. Thank God for the extended warranty. These all went out when it hit 40k mile. Right after the regular warranty expired.

I jumped ship and sold it before it killed me. I was not about to go down with the ship. Surprisingly, they have pretty good resale value...I dont know why??
Now im thinking about purchasing a new Toyota Tundra.

Comfortable seats, interior room, looks, cupholders,. Great truck for a contractor. Handles decent for big vehicle. Never left me stranded.

Weakness:

5.2 engine too weak for truck when loaded. Rough shifting. Had tranny rebuilt at 34k. Exterior finish not great but its a truck. Other than tranny, no complaints.

Overall I am very happy with this truck. Problably would like the drivetrain better if my truck wasn't loaded down all the time. Tough, strong, build. Interior comfort and room more than makes up for drivetrain .
I tried out fords but their seats absoulutly suck! smaller interior.
Chevy wants too much money for their trucks and can't justify why.
I plan on keeping this truck for 10 years if tranny holds up. Tundra,Silverado are superior vehicles but more money and in the Tundra's case, not in the same league in regards to size. Dodge dealer took 1 week to repair tranny after telling me 2 to 3 days.

Off Road wheel/tire package. 17"aluminum wheels have whimpy load range C tires. I have destroyed two rear rims @$280/ea. on unpaved roads in a matter of three weeks. And I haven't even had it out hunting yet!!!!! The factory installed 70 series Goodyears aren't an offroad tire and they can't protect the rims. And with the 17" rims good luck in finding an aftermarket tire in a 75 series. Dealer trying to blame it on rough driving. The second rim shattered last weekend on a first class gravel road, no rocks!!! The wheel/tire package is the main upgrade from the standard SLT. The upgrade is now a liability.

So far the overall truck is pretty good but don't get the 2001 Offroad model. Keep those 16" wheels.

lease $2000 down 199 a mounth, pretty cheap lease i know thats why i got a dodge all of the other trucks where 400+ a month. its not a bad truck the other trucks are just better but you can't beat 200 a month for a fullsize extended cab 4x4 pick up.
