Ram, 1500 Quad Cab, SLT, 4x4
Strength:
Bold styling, roomy and comfortable, quad cab allows for excellent access, SLT Lamamie Trim pkg very functional, holds more people than a SUV, tows like a freight train.
Weakness:
We have the 5.9 V-8. Great engine and smooth as silk, but it "pings" while cruising down the hwy...even worse when hauling a 4500 lbs camper trailer, although performance is not compromised, just annoying. Dealler has been unable to correct this issue. Very thirsty for gas. Average 12 mpg combines and 14 mpg hwy driving. Get 9.8 mpg towing a 3700 lbs 22 foot long camper trailer (4500 lbs loaded). $29,540 MSRP, bought for $25,540 after discounts and rebates. Best looking truck on the road. Fun to drive. Other than enging ping at cruising speeds, we have had no problems with this vehicle. Be prepared to spend a little extra money on your fuel budget. This truck will pass almost anything on the road but a gas station. Similar Products Used: Nissan Frontier extended cab 4x4. Nissan is more reliable and affordable, but not as impressive, good looking or as fun to drive. |

Paint. Gas Mileage, Knocking. Idle roughness. Sound system could use some help. A little more attention to the details inside (plastic fit and finish) Traded in a decked out Dakota for the space. Have always liked the "new look". (What truck looks better? None, I suspect!) I have 3 kids and a wife! There was not enough interior room. Now, I can load up the fam, fill the bed with the required kid accessories and take to the road! I pull a pop up and barely notice it behind the truck. It has some braking difficulties on occassion, but so far, nothing I can't live with. My biggest complaint is the paint. It's a black truck and even the smallest nicks create white spots that are really annoying. I am going to take this to a body shop I know in a year or so and let them do the job right. Just seems to me that a truck paint job would be a little better than the ordinary. Similar Products Used: Dodge Dakota. |

2wd Quad Cab w/5.9
Strength:
Great looks & ride. Has plenty of power to tow boat & camper. Good looking trim on SLT Laramie.
Weakness:
Massive problems across v8 models with spark knock/ping. This is an issue with hundreds+ other owners and still no fix from DMC. They claim they are trying to fix with computer chip update but have been missing the promised fix deadline since I bought truck a year ago! Also MPG is terrible and below EPA est. City/Hghwy is 9/13 combined at 11. This is with a 2wd, no load, driver only? EPA should call them on this ASAP! Ping issue is show stopper. My dealer has performed all recommended service and can do no more. I'm pursuing arbitration & buyback options. Today I'll start shopping for my new Silverado! Similar Products Used: My 90 GMC w/ 110k miles and v8 gets better mileage and doesn't ping. |

Power, Looks, Height, 4x4 Quality! Bought this truck used with 50,000 on it, have put another 6k on it while making my way across the country and back, a great hauling truck especially in wintery weather, planning on adding on and on in the weakness areas over the next few years and driving this one into the ground over the next decade or so, it will see 300K on this 5.2, I know it!
Weakness:
yeah the paint is kinda crappy and I know thanks to the DiRT online list that the trannys don't have the best seals and may slip a little when cold but I'll improve that when it comes time to rebuild :) It's hard to find a sweet deal on a used one with 4x4 cause they are such great trucks on and off road that people aren't unloading them for cheap like furds! But when you do find a fair used price test it hard and if you can find a V8 that growls but doesn't have pinging probs. then buy it! drive it! and feel proud in the company you share as you pay too much for gas at the pumps thanks to the Arco monopolies! Rams Rock & Roll! Similar Products Used: Jeep,GMC, much stronger V8 with a sound like a Big Rig with a little creative exhaust solutions! |

Ram reg cab 4x4 slt
Strength:
good looking. Decent power w/ 5.9 V-8. Has never left me stranded even though it's been worrisome. Comfortable seats and interior. Plenty of room for a reg cab truck.
Weakness:
Poor paint, horrendously bad braking(almost unsafe) that has gotten worse with time and dealers won't/can't fix it. In shop for tranny problems 3 times in first 30K miles. Tranny pan now oozing fluid again. CD player has broken 3 times. Dealer service depts (I've tried 3, they may not all be this bad) are pretty poor. Handling is a generation behind other brands. Vague steering. Size makes it more of a handfull on narrow curvy roads. Engine shudders at idle. Engine roar is much louder than competition. Has the HP and torque but makes a racket if you try to use all of it, unlike Ford or Tundra. I would wait to buy until a redesigned Ram comes out, and then, I would think long and hard about how much time I want to be spending at dealer service depts. I had to "retire" my Ram from work duty and "baby" it (used only for wife's commute to work) because I feared yet another transmission failure AFTER the warranty expired and it's a leased vehicle. My F-150 had ZERO problems in 30,000 miles, as did my C-1500. Just my experience, I know they all have problems. Similar Products Used: '98 F-150, '00 Toyota Tundra, '95 C-1500 Chevy. The Ram is definitely a design cycle behind it's competition now. The F-150 is more refined, but the Tundra is yet another level ahead in terms of quiet ride, handling, smooth engine power, and overall refinement. |

Ram club cab 4x4
Strength:
Looks , very roomy , sits up high like a 4x4 should and that allows running 33'' tires without a lift kit - try that with the new Chevy.
Weakness:
Paint is horrible . My left side had to be repainted because it looked like it was painted with a can of spray. Dealer did fix this but not without some grumbling. Brakes are very week and the cd player is junk. My truck now has 36,000 miles with no major problems and the 5.2 is running smooth as ever. It rides a little rough but hey its a truck right. I get a lot of compliments on the appearance so it must look pretty good. If you go with an exhaust system get a Gibson - Flowmaster is junk. Overall I am happy with the truck but it did set me back 28K fully loaded. Similar Products Used: Toyota 4x4 , Tacoma 4x4 . |

Ram CC 4X4

Cab space, Ride, Frame Strength, Solid front axle 4X4, full galvanized bed and cab
Weakness:
Thin paint coverage makes it easy to scratch. Just a light touch with a hard surface will scratch the body. I was strictly GM until the 94 Rams hit the showroom. The improvements to the frame and the other refinements completely sold me on the new Ram trucks. The Dodge Rams are the only trucks to offer a solid front axle 4X4 in the 1/2 ton truck class, and from my experience with heavyduty 4X4 use the solid axle is a must. If someone had told me 5 or 6 years ago that I would own a Dodge truck, I would have laughed in their face. Now I wouldn't have anything else. Similar Products Used: 1996 Ram CC 2X4 |

Paint sucks, engine accesory part failures My Dodge Ram is a 94' Blue SLT with grey interior. The paint on the hood and fenders peeled off and Dodge refused to repaint the truck. They said that it was normal wear...Thye truck was only 2 years old, I certainly hope paint jobs will last more than 2 years before peeling off. I also replaced a water pump, condensing coil, O2 sensor, catalytic converter and a part for the OD transmission all under warranty but all while the truck was less than three years old. Since then, I've had pretty good luck with the truck. I would probably not buy another Dodge though...I'de look into the Chevy's or maybe even the new Toyota with the V-8. Dodges customer service also is very bad (i.e. the paint job situation). Similar Products Used: First truck |
