Supercab 4X4
Strength:
Reliability, comfort and ride, space for toys, handling.
Weakness:
Gas mileage(2.9l), power. Very pleased with the overall service of this truck. I have always owned imported sports cars prior the purchase of this truck, and own an RX-7 now. Sometimes a person just needs a truck and this one has been very good to me, when I haven't been to it. I've swamped it, had it on 2 wheels(almost rolled it), off roaded it quite bit, had it almost pointing straight up an cliff (wouldn't climb it, but hey, I tried), left me by the side of the road once in the middle of Montanna no less (B.F.E), but that was only temporary. The input shaft bearing in the tranny died in Knoxville TN, I drove it to NW Arkansas before I fixed it. Can't think of any other vehicle that can hold a candle to it in terms of reliabilty. Ranger 4x4 XLT Off-road Flairside
Strength:
Best qualities are the increased horsepower, 6 disk CD changer, and new raised hood. Performes. Great looking truck with the flairside, I really like the Silver Frost paint I chose.
Weakness:
Gas mileage. I wouldn't mind so much if I was pushing 8 cylinders. If this is a problem, and you don't need the power, I would go for a 4 cylinder, still a great truck. Ford could continue to improve the transmission on this truck as well, no 5 speed available for this model,it seems to hold back some of the power available in the 207 HP engine. This is my second Ranger, and I could only ask for a 5.0L in it. I had a 98 extended cab, 4 cylinder prior to this truck. The 98 was great, but obviously lacked the power of the new 4.0L 6 cylinder. The new engine has sufficient power, and feels like a truck should. As far a looks go, the other trucks it the class don't compare. I especially like the new raised hood. As I said, the only thing more I could ask of ford would be a model with an available V-8. Gas mileage will stick you with the 4.0L V-6, so why not add the extra power and take the strain of carrying the equipment off the V-6. The in dash CD changer is the best that I have seen out of the factory... just a great truck Similar Products Used: I've driven them all, lacks the power of a Dodge with a V-8, but still tops the Chevy 4.3L. Foreign trucks need not apply. |

Ford Ranger
Strength:
It has an overall good suspension and cab. The gas mileage is good for a small p/u. Its 2.5l engine can just about out run a little s-10 and has good torque for hauling. I recommend you get something like an f-350 if you want to haul an elephant or a hippopotamus. But its great for the average person who wants to save gas and have a fun ride as well. It’s worth buying if you like small pick-ups and a comfortable ride. I haven't had any problems with the truck.
Weakness:
Needs more ground clearance. I like my ford ranger. It’s got me just about anywhere I need it. I think it is best to get the v6 4x4 manual transmission. Overall, its somewhat fast, reliable, safe (I feel safe in it; compared to an old granny tranny tin can Buick Regal) and fun. It looks great with a sunroof and tinted windows (chicks dig that). I once took that little sucker off-road (eventhough it isn't 4x4) and had a great time; I think its best to put locks on the defrencials so that you won't get stuck in mud. BUT HEY, IT’S FORD OFF-ROAD TOUGH! Similar Products Used: s-10 |

Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab 4x4 2.9 V-6
Strength:
I have almost 200,000 miles on my truck and I often cream my buddies 4.0 trucks 89 blazer 4.3 and a Jeep commanche 4.0. It looks badass with a nice set of after market rims and low pro tires I have 255/60/15 on it. it will go anywhere in the snow or mud as long as i don't go mudding with bald tires. Anyone would enjoy one of these trucks and the extended cab is the only way to go people. everyone has parts for it.
Weakness:
The two tone paint job sucked so i changed it. it can be a little skidish when you horse it and the rear end slides out(like all trucks) mine doesn't a/c but it wouldn't take much to add either. I bought the truck when I was sixteen and had it painted like a newer ranger. It was an old mans truck so the only real thing I have to do to it is replace the U-joints brakes and a few brake lines fuel/oil/air filters and the thermostat because the heater only had high. My little ranger had a factory sun roof which makes look bad ass with my low pro tires and American Racing rims. I would suggest putting a K&N air filter as well as oil filter in the truck. or even ram air (i want to do that still) the ranger station.com has all kinds of add ons and mods for your ranger. I am going to put 19 lb injecters in my 2.9 out of a 302 ThunderBird EFI intake. the 2.9 is an excellent engine. just keep changing the oil in it and it will keep on running. adding or fabricating an exhaust system also increases the horse power. Similar Products Used: The only thing better would be a 92-2001 Ranger XLT extended cab 4x4 with a 4.0 in it. Even if I got a newer one I will keep the '86 because the '86 is still the Bomb. |

Weakness:
2.9 liter V-6, "twin barn-beam" front suspension (harsh road feel, poor handling characteristics), replacement parts are DOUBLE the cost of compact Chevrolet pickup (even aftermarket!) Being an employee at a Ford dealership, I sold the super reliable 1991 Chevy S-10 4.3 that I had owned with no problems for seven years, and bought this jalopy used for $1500 cdn. after three months, the engine blew a head gasket, leaking coolant into the crankcase and spinning the bearings. Since replacing the engine, the truck has never run right, and many experienced technicians at my dealer are unable to suggest a solution to my driveability problems, beyond "replace the computer" which is an obsolete item. The 2.9 V-6 is so underpowered, I think they should have left it in the compact German Ford car it came from. It doesn't belong under the hood of a truck. The amazing thing about these trucks is the resale value, with asking prices of slightly rusty and beat up 12-14 year old Rangers in the $2000-$3000cdn price range. This is $500-$1500 more than the equivalent Chevrolet S-10 Which is a far superior product in every respect! There are a lot of rude sellers out there asking outrageous prices for their junk and a lot of stupid people willing to spend the money! The only Ranger I would recommend is the 1998 and up with true independant front suspension and the bulletproof 3.0 V-6. However, the outrageous price of these vehicles and the total lack of any kind of factory street truck package (a.k.a. Chevrolet Extreme) is a turn off for many young buyers in our area. Are you listening Fo Mo Co ? Ranger Edge ? If I wanted a 4x4, I'd buy a 4x4, you morons! Similar Products Used: Absolutely NO COMPARISON to the Chevy S-10 I replaced with it. I was stupid to sell that truck! |

best a/c ever put into a car(can you frost your windows when its 90 outside?). goes through snow like it's not even there. 8yo truck with no rust at all. can take dirt roads at speeds that scare ppl without any problems. parts are cheap(cost wise). color is unique(i've seen 5 in 3 years)
Weakness:
original tires(firestone radial atx's) sucked massively. could use more power(shoulda got the 4.0). not many aftermarket parts for the 3.0 v6. i bought the truck with 55,000 miles on it about 2.75 years ago and now have 125,000 and it runs the same(strong). maintnance, it happens occaisionally i change the oil every 5000 miles. had to replace front brake calipers at 120,000; changed water pump at 115,000, and alternator at 80,000 that's it. this thing is bulletproof. brakes are a 10 minute job for the fronts. repair is easy. i recommend a cover for the bed as it improves gas mileage dramatically(around 10-15%). only left me stranded once(my fault i got it stuck, not gonna happen again thanks to ramsey winch co.) for snow and ice i recommend Michilin LTX M/S tires as i cannot get it to slide with these tires in 4x4 mode. i don't wash it as much as i should(however there is a nice "protective" coat of mud and dirt on it usually) and i'm still showing minimal rust(small bubble under driver mirror, and small bubble on tailgate). I LOVE THIS TRUCK i recommend it to anyone(but get the x-cab). Similar Products Used: '76 f150 the ranger is much more civilized(i've got carpets!!) |

quality is job one? Give me a break!!! This truck has been a COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT. I purchased it two years ago fully expecting to keep it for atleast eight years. The only number eight involved in this review is trips to the dealership. The quality (or lack thereof) is extremely poor. The truck has less than 24k miles on it. Here is a brief list of the problems: complete front and rear brake jobs, rotors have been machined 2x already, rear axle seals leaked, ball joints, processor, ignition coil, blower motor, transmission and oil leaks. It is back in the shop right now for its 2nd oil leak in 2 months. Similar Products Used: A friend of mine has a 93 Nissan with 160k miles, and it's still going strong. Virtually no problems. Original motor, tranny, clutch. Brakes lasted 100k miles. Never has leaked anything. I'm heading right to Toyota/Nissan for my next truck. I'm trading in the Ford pile of junk. |
