One word, awesome. The V6 is outstanding, and the TRD off-road package is incredible. No other truck can run and drive like the Toyota Tacoma. It looks great, and rides great, my wife even likes it.

I've owned Fords, Chevys, and Dodges, and they all are hunks that end up in the shop. I already have 75k on mine, with the original everything...battery, alternator, belts, brakes, etc...This truck has seen off road driving many times, and it's held it's own. I had to pull a F-150 jacked up truck out with mine....the TRD comes with a Rear Differential Locker. Boy were those rednecks mad at me....

1--Dodge Dakota V8--Not even a comparison, but the Tacoma blew it away...I had one
2--Ford Ranger--not even close...1st year I had one was hell. Bad alternator at 5k miles, brakes at 6k, power steering gone at 11k...

Model Reviewed: Tacoma xtra-cab Pre-Runner

Strength:

I got the 4-cyl motor and I'm pleasantly surprised with its power. Acceleration is great especially with the power button. Great on gas, dependable and looks great.

Weakness:

I think the factory sound lacks a little but its all good.

I loved the Tacoma since it came out in 95 and finally got around to getting one. What a truck! I love it. The pre-runner is an awesome option. I love the 4x4 look but can't afford the insurance price of it and wouldn't really use the 4x4 to much so the pre-runner is great. Great ground clearance but I plan to lift it 3 inches and put 33 inch tires on it to make it look even better.

I had a 91 Ford Explorer and the Tacoma blows it away. Way better on gas and a lot more power even though the Explorer was a V6.

Model Reviewed: Tacoma Reg cab 4x2

Strength:

Manual transmission shifts soooo smooth compared to my Ford. I'm relying on the Toyota dependability. My daughter drives a 92 Corolla with over 140,000 miles - at 120,000 I voluntarily took the car to a garage to have the timing belt and water pump replaced. NEVER DONE ANYTHING ELSE 'CEPT REGULAR MAINTENANCE to this vehicle. Hopefully I'll have the same luck with this truck.

Weakness:

The transmisson has a weird sound.... not really rattling...but lower vibrating sound. I can't see any performance decline. Also...the radio is hard to adjust.... no matter what I do the thing sound tinny. Rear end too light on this truck...jumps around the road.

Biggest weakness was the dealership Sales manager. When I balked at dealer markups and refused to pay a dealer add on - coupon book of some sorts...this manager came out with an attitude. I looked at my sales rep and said, "You seem very straight forward and direct. I like that and like dealing with you... please don't send this guy out again." Sales rep great, finance guy funny and great....sales manager - needs an attitude adjustment....this guy will hurt sales at this dealership.

I like the styling. I like the smooth shifting (manual). The A/C was verrry cold and that's a plus in Texas. I bought a basic no frill and thrills model and that's what I got. I also own a Ford F-150 extended cab so I knew the small truck wouldn't have the same comfortable ride as my larger truck. I bought this truck because...well...shoot it takes around $60.00 to fuel up my double tank Ford. I wanted a small truck to putter around town in.

Strength:

Awesome V6 and off-road ability.

Weakness:

Wide spread mystery water leak/coverup. One guy said the doors were cheap and I have to agree, you ever seen a Tacoma after a side impact collision? I can shut the doors with a pinky. The bed wall is too shallow, a 5 gallon bucket of paint pokes out the top. My Tundra seats are much better than the Tacoma I have to say. If you can afford it move up to the Tundra, you won't be sorry.

I have to agree with the posters below, I had a leak problem too but my dealer could never figure it out. It has to be something to do with the winshield, as you know it rains ALOT in Seattle. Water leaked in the cab and accumulated under the carpet causing it to mold and smell, I was almost positive it was the A/C drain line but the dealer tested it and it wasn't. I had a Subaru that did that once. Finally traded mine in on the V8 Tundra, I check the floor pan weekly.

Strength:

V6, rims and tires, styling.

Weakness:

Short bed height, light tinny sounding doors, cheap interior door panels, crappy radio, seats are the worst in any truck made. These are the areas Toyota skimps on to save money. Leaks water!

LEMON! The damn thing leaked from day one, water would accumulate under the dash and then underneath the carpet. It rotted the carpet and padding and rusted the floorboard. Toyota dealership never could figure out where it was coming from, it wasn't a kinked A/C line either. Traded the damn thing in at another Toyota dealer so I wouldn't take a bath on it. Toyota is covering something up here folks.

I bought the Tundra, HUGE improvement.

Strength:

Good exterior looks, Roomy interior, driveability.

Weakness:

Water leaks inside vehicle following rain or car washing.
Dashboard rattling niose

Those of you who think your Toyota double cab is built to last, think again! If I were you, after the next rainy day or car wash you may want to check the passenger side floor board for water. Since December 2000, I have purchased two (2) Toyota double cabs. I traded in the first one after discovering a pool of water under the carpet mat on the passenger side. I will not go into the details of what the dealer did or did not do, but they were no help. Not having the time or patience to deal with the dealership or Toyota and figuring this was probably some maufacturing defect, I traded in the first double cab and purchased another one from different Toyota dealer in another city. Now, three months later, I discover the same problem I had with the first double cab, water on the floorboard following a heavy rain. This is not a dealership problem, this is a Toyota problem. I am totally disapointed with this vehicle, I expected more from a Toyota product. In addition to finding water inside my vehicle, the dashboard make a hideous rattling noise. Until Toyota corrects these problems, I would stay away from this vehicle. Certainly the quality is severly lacking on this vehicle.

Model Reviewed: Tacoma Double Cab PreRunner V6 SR5 w/chrome TRD

Strength:

Overall quality, durabiliy and reliability. Performance and Suspension. V6 should be the only choice.

Weakness:

Price tag (yet worth it)

First thing I've got to say...If your a member of Costco, go through their auto buying program. If you don't you'll be lucky to get $100 bucks off sticker. With Costco, I got it for $1000 over invoice and $1100 under MSRP.
I believe that this is the best looking truck on the market. It has a conservative/refined yet aggressive appearance. My truck is silver w/P265/16's with aluminum wheels and bedliner.
From the dealership, it came with a couple of flaws...a leaky upper radiator hose(clamp was off position), dome light not secured, and rear passenger backup light bulb not working...all repaired the next day under warranty. I'm not worried about these minor issues, as I'm a long time Toyota car/truck owner and am confident this truck will have no problem delivering for the next 10 years.
Inside: I like the warm feel of it's dash and consoles compared to what I think are a cold feeling Nissan and Chevy. Quality looks top notch and have heard excellent reviews of its durability. Only complaint is I can't see the clock clearly. Passengers have the best look at the time. It's directly behind the wiper and cruise controls. Somebody screwed up. There are at least 5 better places where that could have gone. Everything else is very easy to read and reach. I love the black on white gauges. This is the first time I've had a CD player in the vehicle and wish I got the CD changer. Seats are firm and comfortable. Sooo much room in the back. 3 adults fit back there without too much discomfort. Better than I expected. Rear doors open nice and wide for easy access.
Mechanical: The 3.4L V6 is the only way to go. I drove the 2.7L I4 and it felt like a dog. You had to slam it to get it to move. The V6 moves almost effortlessly. The power ECT control is nice when you really want the truck to go but is hard on the gas. I've got to learn more about the Locking Rear as to why the differential in the locked possition only allows you to go 5 miles per hour. It supposedly is intended to get you out of a situation AFTER your're stuck. I would think you'd want to have it locked so that you DONT get stuck.(OffRoading) ??? I do like the feel of the suspension. It has a nice stiff feel. I like feeling the road, after all it is a truck right?

Only comparable truck to Tacoma is the Dakota. If the Dakota was a Toyota, I would have purchased it...but it's not.
