Model Reviewed: extra cab 4x4

Strength:

plenty of power for the 4 cylinder pushing 31x10.50 tires
incredible off road capabilities compared to full sized trucks
has many performance products offered to enhance toyota
able to stick 6 1/2" speakers in extra cab sides without cutting
extra cab is a must to carry equipment, people, and things not getting wet
great gas mileage
great ground clearance even without a lift

Weakness:

poor horn performance

I would definately recomend a toyota truck must have an extended cab. I have gone through a lot of stuff (mud, snow, and rocks) with no problems. It climes like a champ, and I have gone through things that my friends couldn't go through. I can also go farther than my friends due to the terrific gas mileage. I've almost had this truck for four years (bought it used and now has almost 80K miles) and the only problems I've had was replacing the starter, having to do all of the off roading because my truck performed better than my friends, and all the brush scratches on my truck (but that's why you buy a four wheel drive). Everybody talking about the uncomforatable ride (seats and shocks) shouldn't even be looking for a truck because these sissys don't need to be off road, buy a car.

Strength:

Tough looking, great styling. Super amount of leg room in back seat. Toyota quality!

Weakness:

Fairly narrow cab. The side of my knee rubs against the door panel extension of the arm rest.

Unfortunately, I was reared ended 6 days after I bought my new Tacoma at a speed of approximately 40MPH. I just got the truck back from the body shop last week and have only driven it for about 2 weeks total, but so far I really like it. I only got the 2.7L 4 banger (not the 6 cyl) and haven't really hopped on it yet, but I hope it has adequate power for my needs. I was looking for better gas economy, not power. We'll see how it performs. If anyone else has the same truck, I'd like to read your review!

Model Reviewed: Toyota Tacoma 2wd TRD Prerunner

Strength:

The engine is great. I tow a 8'x16' car trailer around with it with no problem. The suspension handles great off-road. I have gotten out of some trouble with the locker many times.

Weakness:

The cab could use some work. The back seat is to small. It is only good for short trips. The locker is hard to get engaged somtimes. I have an automatic and the shifter rattles around way too much.. Maybe somebody knows how to quiet it down. Also after only 46,000 miles the shift selecter shaft seal was leaking. It was still under warranty but it should not have gone out that fast.

I enjoy having my Tacoma and Don't have any real problems with it..If I had to I would buy it all over again. It is a great truck. My Tacoma is a great truck and I would recommend anybody buying the same kind of truck.
My girlfriend drives my truck around and doesn't want to give it back she likes it so much.

Model Reviewed: V-6 Prerunner Extra Cab SR-5

Strength:

The V-6 has plenty of power. On and offroad handling is great. Toyotas are just about bullet-proof. Auto transmission lets me drink an extra cup of coffee on the way to work. Truck looks great amd cleans up real well. Excellent ground clearance. We just had a tropical storm that dumped 36 inches of rain(no, I'm not exaggerating) on parts of the city of Houston. I had to work late that night and I got caught driving home in the worst part of it. I had to drive through some streets where the water was over my doors and passed a lot of other so-called "SUVs" that got flooded because they didn't have the ground clearance and the door closures weren't air-tight. Boy, I'd sure be pissed off if I paid $20k (or more) for a high clearance, offroad vehicle and it got bogged down in water that was just knee deep. (I really think some SUVs are really mini-vans with the engine in the front.) Kudos to Toyota for building a great truck.

Weakness:

The extra cab is roomy for two people, but forget back seat passengers. Every now and then I wish I had gotten the 4-door, but what the heck. In twenty years, when I'm ready to buy my next Toyota......

This is a follow up to my last post. I've had the truck for close to a year. I've experienced no mechanical trouble. The ride is great for an offroad suspension. Reading some of these reviews, I've noticed some guys complaining that the ride is harsh, to which I reply: if you wanted a sofa on wheels, you shoulda bought an Oldsmobile. I've also been reading where some guys have had problems with the dash rattling. I haven't experienced this problem -- knock on wood. Overall, it's a great truck and you still can't buy a better product. It gets better. Read on below......

No comparison to my old piece-of-sh*t Dodge. It's every bit as good as my last Toy truck, which was a 4x4. I highly recommend the product and I'm upgrading my rating to five stars all around.

Model Reviewed: Tacoma Dbl Cab TRD

Strength:

Strong V6, great handling suspension (TRD package), DoubleCab offers plenty of space for passengers, easy to use cruise control, good utility, looks great on the outside!

Weakness:

Squeaks and rattles, quality of interior appalling, color of interior gets dirty too easily and falls apart, overall quality of secondary controls suspect, poor gas milege, jittery and noisy ride, Toyota dealers suck!

I purchased a 2001 Toyota Tacoma DoubleCab TRD after test driving the Nissan CrewCab Supercharger (noisy engine, ugly exterior) and Ford Ranger (boring and small) and Chevy S-10 (crap). Dealer had tried to strong-arm me into paying an additional $1500 due to "popularity" of model and "Toyota quality". After wasting 1 1/2 hours going back and forth on this one issue (we hadn't even begun to talk about the overall purchase price of the vehicle yet) I finally backed him down to a $200 dealer mark-up, but made him throw-in a bedliner for that extra $$ - called it a wash. He then proceeded to tell me there would be no further negotiations on the price of the truck. It would be the MSRP plus the $200 mark-up. If I didn't like it, tough. Felt like this was a bad deal but I accepted it because I wanted the truck and had determined that the quality of Toyota was worth the premium. Boy was I wrong!

In the next few months, I discovered the following:

Day 1 - Defective windshield (large black mark imbedded into the glass on the passenger side), defective paint on the left-front fender (a large patch of discolored paint underneath the clear-cote), tires that were over-inflated by an average of 25 psi (dealer error).
Day 3 - The squeaks and rattles started.
Day 4 - CD player stopped working.
Day 6 - CD player started working again.
Day 12 - Passenger side air vent stopped working.
Day 21 - Stiching in drivers seat began falling apart.
Day 30 - Climate control fan stopped working.
Day 33 - Cliimate control fan began working again.
Day 34 - Climate control system failed completely - including A/C.
Day 40 - Paint??? began to flake off the power window control plate on the driver side door, exposing black surface against light gray interior. Looks like hell.
Day 44 - Even more squeaks and rattle developing.
Day 46 - Gouges created in interior plastic panels by gentle encounters with passengers and bass case (I'm a musician), exposing a white colored plastic underneath. Interior Looking like hell.
Day 73 - Five visits to dealer and the climate control system still not fully repaired. Interior looking worse every day. Wonder what will go wrong next. So much for Toyota quality and the extra money I wasted paying for it.

The verdict: This truck drives great, handles great. Other than that, it's a complete letdown of massive proportions and severly over-priced compared to the competition. The interior is poorly assembled with inferior quality plastics and the quality of the vehicle's secondary controls are suspect at best. If you are considering buying a loaded, expensive Tacoma with all the bells and whilstles - dont! You will be disappointed and cringe like me everytime you make your expensive truck payment.

If you need a basic truck that should go the distance mechanically and if you can tolerate a rattle box interior that falls apart/looks like hell, then buy a bottom-of-the-line Tacoma and laugh at all the fools like me who spent big dough on their Tacoma's, expecting Toyota quality to extended to trucks. Next time I'll buy a Ford F-150. My buddy has one and it's quiet, powerful and built to last. Plus it costs several thousand dollars less.

POWER< POWER. this truck has some major power to handle some rough terrain.
the overall dependability.

Weakness:

Weak side tire panels, dents very easily. not enough cab room, can only fit three twelve inch subs. and also the factory sound system sux.

Awesome overall truck, the 2nd ive owned. Being in highschool, this truck is great for hauling football equipment around. Awesome mountain vehicle, it can get you to any local fishing or hunting spot and leave other similar trucks in the dust. This vehicle is always there to get you or one of your buddies out of a bind.

Strength:

Pretty good sound from premium sound system. No wind noise. Roomy front seats. Excelent A/C. No mechanical problems.

Weakness:

NO CLOCK??!!- what kind of car doesn't come with a clock? 2.7L I-4 could use a bit more power, no tachometer. Passenger seat squeaks- 2 trips to dealer, and still not found, rattle in driver side air vent area when going faster than 45mph. Engine is a bit rough with the A/C turned up.

So far, so good. Unfortunately the seat squeaks (very high pitch), but the stereo can cover it up. Too bad the doors aren't insulated more, with the bass turned up, the door panel at the top rattles. Overall, good gas milage, peppy engine with a fairly smooth 4-speed auto. Has the 4x4 looks with the 4x2 price. A great first car.

Strength:

Awesome styling and rugged look. Toyota quality and assurance. Lots of interior room, especially in back seat area.

Weakness:

Could be a tad bit wider in the drivers seat area. My left knee rubs against the arm rest on the door. Gas milage is not so great for a 4 cylinder (it may be due to the extra CCs.

I like my truck very much, but wish it was a little more economical on the fuel side. The 2.7L 4-cylinder engine has enough power for my needs (I don't haul very much). Six days after I bought my Tacoma, I was rear ended on the freeway. Just got it back last week and it seems to be as good as new (time will tell). I am interested in hearing from other double cab owners for their opinions and comments.

Model Reviewed: Tacoma TRD 4WD Xtra-cab

Strength:

This truck is one that will put other trucks to shame. Took it out the to the Glamis sand dunes over new years, and it whooped on every other truck out there. I can make it up the same hills in this truck that quads and sand rails are running. Never got stuck, the 4WD system and rear locker are strong and reliable. The engine power is great, torque is awesome. get a 5 speed, you will have more available power and torque than an auto. I have a 5speed. And of course, Toyota good looks and reliability are second to none. Beefier looking hood and front, white faced gauges, 16inch rims, and BFGoodrich tires are also new. BFGs all the way.

Weakness:

Of course it was exxpensive, but you get what you pay for. Also, the coilover Bilstein shocks are a little to soft for the whoops. But on the road it rides like a Cadillac.

Buy this truck if you REALLY go off-roading. This is what it is for, not picking up the groceries. If you just want to look cool, buy something else that isn't nearly as capable as the Tacoma.
