Tundra
Strength:
Fast, smooth ride and looks good.
Weakness:
Braking system sucks. Have pulsing problem. Drums needed to be resurfaced at 44,000 plus new rotors. Hope this solves the pulsating problem. No warning of brake problems before pulsing started. center console cheaply made. Clock in bad spot.not enough room in back seat area. Good truck just has some flaws. Newer models will most likely not have these problems. Hope my brake problem will go away. Similar Products Used: Hade other trucks before first full size. No other brake problems with other trucks in the past. |

Access Cab V-6 5 speed
Strength:
Good gas mileage, nice visibility
Weakness:
Under powered, lots of engine noise. Of course the horrible back seat, and clock position. Nice truck, good quiet ride. I like toyota. Good overall truck. But I like my 96 Tacoma 4x4 better. Similar Products Used: F150, Dakota. Comparable to f150 (a little smaller) The ford beat toyota in a couple of areas, but the toyota was best overall all. And toppers was that the toyota was cheaper. Sticker was 23000, but I got it on ad for 18,700. |

Tundra
Strength:
Smooth ride, like a luxury sedan. Excellent power.
Weakness:
The transmission failed two months after purchase. Toyota is not standing behind their product, they're full of excuses. Also, the clock is placed in an odd location. If I had to do it over again, I would have kept my T-100. It never gave me any trouble. Had over 115k on it with minimal repairs. I doubt I'll buy a Toyota product again since I've gotten the run around on the repairs for the Tundra's tranny. This last purchase experience with Toyota has been disappointing (and God knows that's an understatement!). Would not recommend this truck to anyone who lives in a rural setting where there's snow. Toyota claims you abuse your vehicle which voids your warranty. My wife drives a 2000 Rav4 that can kick the pants off the Tundra. She was able to get out of our snow covered drive without blowing her transmission! Similar Products Used: Have owned three Toyota trucks in the past: A 1987, a 1993, & a 1996 T-100. The Tundra has truly disappointed me in comparison. |

Strength:
The ride is super smooth like a full-size Lexus. The engine and exhaust feel and sound like they are coming from a car next to you at the light and not your vehicle (super quiet). The first time I drove down a dirt road I turned to my buddy with me and asked "What dirt road?" When it hits second gear you'd better hang on until around 80mph---zooom, be careful, you'll run right up the butt of the Chevy/Ford/Dodge out in front of you.
Weakness:
My dash has a plastic-buzz. The trans does seem a little sloppy when accelerating after braking. Where are the pockets behind the seats? The wiper arm does get in my way often. And... my big concern is a drive-line vibration that is felt throughout the entire frame from 78mph and higher. It's a constant buzz, buzz, buzz like a slow musical beat. The mechanic said he couldn't feel it (poor roads?), but on the Interstate for 5 hours and I'm batty. I guess if the ride wasn't so smooth and the interior weren't so quiet I wouldn't hear this stuff (but $28,000 later and I do). I worked as Quality control for a couple of years in a major body-shop and I've driven almost everything. This truck makes the whining transmission of a Ford, the rattles of a Chevrolet, and the clunkyness of a Dodge seem silly. Similar Products Used: I had a 94 4-Runner (Jap made) and it was indestructable. Never any squeaks or buzzes from the Japanese model. The Tundra's ride and power make up for those I guess. |

V8, Standard cab, 4x4
Strength:
Absolutely amazing. I love everything about the truck except the warning stickers plastered all over the center console and the sun visors and they are impossible to remove without damaging the cloth fabric, (which i unfortunately found out).
Weakness:
Saftey stickers in french, spanish and english that are redundant and ridiculous...telling me to put children in the back seat when i have no back seat. They are ugly, distracting and impossible to remove. Toyota should be sued for the replacement of new visors and a center console. I waited a long time for a new 4x4 standard cab only to have distracting stickers all over the interior. Other then that it is an impressive truck that drives like the lexus it is(has a lexus engine and transmision). When i drive it it is hard not to smile except for the yellow stickers all over the interior. Similar Products Used: Drove a 1995 toyota T100 4x4 170,000 miles and loved it....this V8 is much nicer and gives 18+ mpg. |

4x4 sr5 access cab v8
Strength:
Plenty 'o' power! Strong acceleration, great towing capacities relative to size, very comfortable ride, stout suspension off road and for towing, phenomenal 4 piston front caliper braking with 12.5'' drums in rear that stop significantly shorter than class comparables, lots of room in front seats. I did my homework on this truck and there is nothing better in the 1/2 ton class. Best 0-60 time in class bone stock which is tough to dismiss.
Weakness:
A little tighter in the backseat than the six inch longer chevy/ford/dodge full sizes. Toyota could do a little better with the plastics in the interior. after market mods are pricey. This truck kicks arse. For the money, it cannot be beat. With 245 horse (240 with calif. emmissions crap) and 315 ft/lbs torque, it runs stronger than others tested. I swear, 240 Japanese hp is comparable to 265 domestic, they just get the most bang/liter. best ground clearance in class embarasses domestics off-road. Besides, the man that invented off-road racing, Ivan Stewart, races a Toyota Tundra... hmmmmm go figure. Aftermarket straight through exhaust modified to exit in front of right rear wheel just like Stewart's looks and sounds sweet. I've never had a vehicle that I pictured still owning in 10 years until now. And for those that will complain about the gas mileage of the Tundra... buy a gas/electric hybrid car, not a v8 truck. Similar Products Used: Traded in a '98 dodge dakota 4x4 xtnd cab. test drove chevy/ford/dodge class comparables similarly equipped with higher sticker prices and lesser performance. my dakota had lousy brakes and was a gutless wonder for the number of mods that went into it... don't ever even be tempted to buy a dakota. |

No comments - See review summary below "Weaknesses: Not enough power! I had this '99 for 4 months and finally traded it in. I could not believe the problems I had in only 4k miles. Transmission blew at 800miles, dash squeaks, radio sounds tinny, doors feel like tin, etc. I had an 87 F150 before and thought I'd go to see what Japan had to offer. Well, the dealers are thieves and service sucks. I traded this in for a 2000 Sierra and couldn't be happier. More feel to the ride and you know you're in a truck with power when you hit the gas."
