Toyota Tundra
Strength:
I have a 2000 Limited Tundra with everything including TRD off-road package, the Dual TRD Exhaust, tube rails, the works. I like everything about it (except one, see below). The effortless ride on rough terrain is what amazes me the most. I am currently building a house on 33acres and had to walk the distance (since my 92' 3000GT VR-4 only hass 2.5 inches of clearance). I now run from the pavement onto rough dirt/stone doing 30mph.
Weakness:
The only thus far (only 1500miles) has been the fuel economy. Of course I understood this when looking at full size trucks. Never the less I would have like to get better then my average 15mpg. Do keep in mind that this is with TRD dual exhausts and soon a K&N intake.

Tundra SR5 Extended Cab V-8, 4WD
Strength:
Good power and acceleration with the V-8. Engine and ride are very smooth. Hills present no problem for this truck. No squeaks or rattles. Milege varies between 15.3 and 19.5 depending on city or highway. Supberb brakes.
Weakness:
3 things I do not like. The center console moves too much when down and the door detents don't work much at all on a hill or if there's a breeze blowing. Could be quicker from a dead stop - could use a lower 1st gear in trans or lower final drive ratio then the 3:91:1. Once the motor winds up some it does make up for the slow start though. $30k out the door including tax and license. I would highly reccomend the Tundra to anyone who wants a 1/2 ton pickup truck. I feel the ride and quiet are excellent. It is so comfortable that I actually enjoy driving in the SF Bay area again in spite of the traffic. The factory stereo is also excellent. I have slightly over 12k miles on it with no trips to the dealer about anything except the left power mirror that would not go up/down when I got it (probably from some kid pushing on the button too long). I showed up at the dealer a week later and they fixed it on the spot in 45 minutes with no appointment. (Modesto Toyota if anyone cares). I refer to it as my Lexus pickup as I feel it's that good. I also like the fact it's easy to park. Similar Products Used: I test drove the big 3 before I got this. I felt the Tundra was vastly superior in ride and comfort. The Silverado I test drove had rattles right from the first bump. I didn't want to deal with rattles and GM again. I had a 88 GMC Ext Cab 4WD which basicaly went thru 4 transmissions, two rear ends, brakes went out (even when they did work they sucked) and had valve stem seals replaced once and needed them again when I sold it. (and no I do not beat the truck to death I drove it rather convervatively) I seriously expect that I will not have this much trouble with the Tundra. |

SMOOTH. SOLID FEELING. HANDLES WELL. REALLY LIKE THE CONFIGURATION. I REFUSE TO SACRIFICE THE BOX FOR FOUR FULL DOORS. PERSONAL OPINION: 4 DOORS LOOK RIDICULOUS. WHEN YOU SPEND THIS KIND OF MONEY, YOU SHOULD GET WHAT YOU WANT.
Weakness:
DON'T GET ME WRONG. I LIKE IT, BUT IT HAS SOME PROBLEMS. DESPITE THE NIT-PICKING, ITS ALMOST PERFECT FOR ME, BUT I LIKED MY 1998 AND 1999 EXTENDED CAB DAKOTA SLTs TOO. Strength:
The engine is very smooth and quick but is by no means quiet. There is also the promise of Toyota reliability.
Weakness:
Unlike many others who have reviewed this truck, I don't feel like it has a smooth or car-like ride. It rides much like my 4Runner, fairly nimble, with good road feedback but it transmits too much of a sharp jolt to the cab when riding over rough roads. The truck seems to roll significantly with turns. The seats are horrible, way too flat, hard, and not at all support especially from the sides. I am only 5'8" and I felt cramped in the front seat and felt like I had no head room. A holdover from previous Toyotas is that the seat is too close to the floor so your legs feel like they lay straight out instead of feeling like you're sitting in a chair. Finally, the back seat room is horrible. Despite all the great reviews I disagree pretty strongly and I am a Toyota owner. I love my 4Runner for what it is, tough, reliable, but small. The Tundra still feels like a small truck to me compared to the domestics and is nowhere near as plush. The toughest question for me is do I want to risk reliability issues of the domestics versus the compromises of the Tundra???? Similar Products Used: 2000 Silverado LT, 2000 F150 |

Strength:
smooth power, smooth transmission, solid, tight feel, refined, decent looks.
Weakness:
Could still use a little more power. But its definitely a good amount and has enough for most people. A little smaller than the american offerings, but that could be a good thing or a bad thing, just depends on what you like. The look of the front end and interior are a little Fordish. excellent truck, chevy has more power. I guess more than anything right now. Excellent tight feel. Great price. Feels solid and should last like a typical Toyota, forever. Great brakes. Chevy has rear discs, but Toyota claims that drums are better for a truck for some reason, I forgot. Lets see if they stand by their word and stick with rear drums forever. I think they said with a heavy load in the rear it can cause rotor warpage under extreme braking situations like a long decent on a grade fully loaded. Who knows, maybe its just an excuse for the lack of drums. We'll see someday. The Landcruiser has rear discs already. Youd think they could easily and fairly inexpensively integrated the same brakes from the LC to the Tundra. Anyway, a great offering and it will only get better. The next redesign should be nothing but amazing. This ones still the best in my eyes. I would like to have it a hair bigger inside but its nice to have it a little smaller sometimes too. Like in tight parking spots. Its a trade off. Similar Products Used: ford and chevy comparables |

Tundra
Strength:
Toyota has did it again. My third Toyota truck and this model takes the cake and leaves little to be desired. The Tundra is very rommie inside and not to large on the outside as other trucks in its class. The pick-up and go is great and a smooth ride as well. Enjoying the captain chairs and the sound system as well. Very comforting to drive the Tundra with the assurnce Toyota is standing behind this great Truck. As if anything major might go wrong with this truck as compared to other makers.
Weakness:
Don't care for the spare tire lock. Difficulty installing such a basic part. The center compartment (between the captain chairs) could of been deeper for storage. OUT THE DOOR PRICE $25,500 Similar Products Used: Third Toyota in 11 years...No need to change makers when everything is golden! |

Strength:
DOHC V8, Very Smooth Acceleration, Ride, and Handle.
Weakness:
Anti-Lock Brake its very hard to find, I dont have that on my truck. I have search all over the southern california dealer. Dealers told me that you have to special order them, it takes about 2-3 month befor they deliver to your door. Toyota should take the Speed Limter off. Speed Limter is set at 110 mph. Its could probebly do 135 or more. Even though is a V8 I can still get 22 mpg on freeway. I got this truck for $550 over the invoice, other dealer wont sell it for that price. Very Powerful V8 (4.7 DHCP with 245 hp /315 ) I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a truck on its class. Similar Products Used: I have test drove Chevy 1500 and Ford F-150 before I choose to buy Tundra. I dont like the look on 1500, and it all come down between F-150 or Tundra, I really like the looks on F-150 but the Engine just not as Bas As# as the DOHC V8 Tundra. |
