Toyota Tundra Trucks | Vans

DESCRIPTION

Available in Regular cab, Double Cab and CrewMax styles, the Tundra also features three bed lengths, three engines, three wheelbases and a choice of 4X2 or 4X4 configurations.

The Tundra offers three engines and three cab sizes. Handling is relatively responsive, but the ride with the TRD package is stiff. The 5.7-liter V8 is very powerful. The tailgate is easy to raise and lower. A new 4.6-liter V8 replaced the old 4.7-liter for 2010.

At 45K:
Turned rotors 2 times now.
Replaced disk break pads.
Adjust drums.
(NOTE - There is a service bullitin on the breaks).
Clunk in trans. and shifting at stop.
Door pops open when I hit a bump.
Viberates.
Ever seen an automobile on the freeway that has a tire(s) bouncing up and down like a basketball? Well thats what the frnt tires of the Tundra do.
Looks 10 years old.
Metal is slightly stronger than alum. foil.
High depreciation.
It is a Yugo with no trunk lid and bad gas milage.
Toyota reemployed the designer of the AMC Pacer to do this truck body.

Model Reviewed: Tundra 4X4 limited

Strength:

Power and handling, and a very good looking truck, sound system is great on limited 4X4

Weakness:

Constant transmission problem, during hard stop the transmission will make "clunk" noise and the car will lunge forward (a big safety issue). ALso, in some cases when ABS is applied the car will shut itself off and ABS light will come on, one time we were stranded on the highway and not able to drive the car and must be towed back to the dealership.

First off, the gas mileage is not near the advertised 13/17. We've been getting 11 on the city and 15 on the highway. Compare to similarly equipped silverado with more horsepower and more cubic inch, it's not a good deal at all.

Numerous complaints has been filed against Toyota Tundra 4X4 on the transmission problem (on Motor trend, carreview, and other web sources) but they deny there's any problems and insists the problem must be reproduced by one of their mechanics. Regional factory technical specialist showed up the other and stayed around for only 10 minutes and then took off. Couple of days we've left our trucks in the dealership and basically nothing was done on it. I would not recommend this car because I think this is their first year making full size truck. the problems we've found after 25000 miles are major safety issues.

Strength:

Quality Workmanship and Design. Tons of Power. More refined and feels more solid than any of the other large pickups. Nicely appointed interior. Engine is very quiet yet very powerful.

Weakness:

Odd clock location, inadeqate rear bumper design, Gas Door can only be unlocked from outside. Design of cloth bench seat armrests almost guarantees they will be filthy with sweat and dirt in a short while. Premium sound is pretty weak.

My wife and I researched and drove numerous trucks before we selected the Tundra. We have two small children (3yo and 8mth) and we wanted a vehicle that would accommodate them around town and occasionally (once-twice a year) on longer trips of about 250 miles. Our oldest was able to easily get in and out of a 4x4 with the Off-Road Package as long as it was equipped with running boards. We have a '93 Camry we bought new and have enjoyed it through over 120K so the quality of the vehicle was a great selling point. We submitted an e-mail to 8 Atlanta-area dealerships with specific features in mind including color. We knew one dealership had exactly what we wanted and they wouldn't come down on price. We eventually narrowed the field to two dealerships and finally ordered it through Marietta Toyota. Our salesman, Perry Kinney, did a great job of working with us and kept the super-salesman stuff to a minimum (ok, a few things) but nothing we couldn't handle. We got the price we wanted and they ordered the truck. A week later they called and told us our truck was there. Amazing how fast it got there in light of the fact it was built specifically for us. It came in exactly as ordered and they had us in our truck in an hour. We have driven it around town and some on the Interstate. I am planning a trip soon to the country and will get to see how it handles in the real dirt.

I would buy this for someone that doesn't need it as a primary family car. The towing capacity seems pretty good but I haven't used it yet.

Model Reviewed: Tundra Limited 4x4

Strength:

Great power and off the line performance, brakes are top quality, comfortable front seats, good stereo with in-dash 6cd, quiet on the road, good cross country ride, eats up bumps on the road with great shocks, drives like a car, four wheel drive on the fly is great.

Weakness:

It desperately needs a limited slip with the BFG tires online, front end could be a bit higher, back seat uncomfortable (who cares if you are driving), clock position a pain, AC could be a bit more powerful.

This is one solid truck. Toyota quality is definetly there and I have not had one single problem with it. The ride quality and power are the two biggest things it has going for it other than having the Toyota name. The truck is not as big as the other three, but it fills the niche between full size and compact trucks. There is plenty of bed room and it can tow the toys and most everything the average joe has. The interior is first class and very comfortable. There is very little noise inside the cab even at high speeds. I couldn't be happier with this truck and all that comes with it.

Strength:

I love the solid feel and ride. The power is great. Milege is very good on the freeway 20 mpg at 70 to 75. Everything fits beautiful. Very quiet when off-roading. My wife loves to drive it too. Great stereo, 6 in dash CD and sound system is great.

Weakness:

Front seats are not as comfortable as they should be and the cab could be a little bit longer for more rear seat room.

I have had the Tundra for over 5 months and have put about 4,500 miles on it. It is the best riding truck I have ever been in and by far the most quiet. I have had it off road and it is very smooth. It gets very good milege (on the freeway). What Toyota could do to improve it would include increasing the payload, adding 4" to rear cab for better seating (families), a little longer wheel base for towing stability, and increasing the motor to compete with the big boys (350 cubic inch). I have many of my friends say they would love to get a Tundra but they have a family or tow a trailer thats above the towing limit of the Tundra. If you travel around the country as I do (in my motorhome) you will see that most of the trailers are in the neighorhood of 25 to 30 feet. These trailers weigh in at about 7 to 8 thousand pounds. Most people don't buy a truck to pull a trailer when the trailer is at or over the capacity of the truck. If toyota were to make a heavy duty verson of this truck, watch out!

Similar Products Used:

Drive all the others then drive the Tundra, that all it takes. The tundra feels more like a Lexus than a truck. But It does not have the pay-load and towing power of others when you order them with the heavy duty packages.

Excelent power and great breaks. The back doors are nice to have and the hight is impressive.

Weakness:

Some of my shorter friends have a hard time climbing into it.

The first time I saw my baby I was as giddy as a friggin school girl. The power of its v8 and the grace of its stearing are enough to make a grown man cry. The second week I owned it I parked it amist a hord of pimped out hondas and made them cower in fear at the sound of my 2 ton truck. I have found the overall speed and ride to be very nice. I can be makeing out with a girl and still have the control I need to drive. This is definatly the best car I have ever had and i would recomend it to anyone who wants a phat ride

gotten poor safety scores.

this truck is by FAR! the best truck i have ever driven. its got
a very strong engine (v8). the ride is super quite, feels like

right away.

Weakness:

Have yet to see any weaknesses.

If anyone is looking for a truck, look no further. I used to be a Chevy man until I drove this truck. I have read many articles on how the Tundra is blowing Ford & Chevy away. I can see why!

Strength:

Like most of us, this truck is Quiet, Smooth, and Dependable. Love that Thunder Grey color. The shell allows a 6ft. 2in. bed in the back for easy camping in remote areas, my side windows open upward for full ventilation and curb side loading. Friends have bought after riding in mine.

Weakness:

The large sized tires and alloy rims are harder to keep in balance, I too had the Shimmy at first! Rebalance or rotate the tires on the rim until all four are at about the same weight, mine are 3/4 oz. Watch the air pressure, & rotation. If you do not correct the balance, the brake system and bearings will die fast. A couple panic stops, or stopping a trailer with no brakes too fast, will do any truck harm This should apply to ALL
NEW TRUCKS with the larger size tires we now run! Centrifical force and heat is the culprit. I cut an access hole to grab the oil filter easier, don't have to remove the motor shield to change oil.

I read these reviews, visited all the local other dealers, read the new truck ratings, and bought the best truck--Bar None! My mechanic said this truck is built tougher than any 1/2 ton he's seen on the rack. I put on 18k miles in one year, no problems & can get 19+ mpg. on premium gas. I use mid range at 18 mpg, regular drops to 16+, costs more in the long run.
Most important on long trips is hearing audio book tapes, or music and arrive as fresh as I could in my Lincoln Continental, thats hard to beat.

There is an after market limited slip axle for the truck, just out 2 weeks ago. It may void the warranty, so check your dealer & Toyota rep.
