Strength:

Accuracy

Weakness:

Poor low end output, Cost factor, don't get worked up about the cosmetics

I had lots of time to play with my boston 12.5lf. It was an above average sub as far as sq goes. The sub cuts out at about 32 hz in recomended box 28 liters. I was dissapointed in the low end output. I experimented with it by making 4 different boxes. The best I found was 1.2 qfoot after that power handleing drops fast. With the 1.2 qfoot box I got a rolloff of about 28 hrtz. I really believe for the money you can do much better. The overall output of the sub was only fair. The sub under intence musical passages at high volume didn't always act as accurate as other subs I owned. The poor low end is from a somewhat small xmax. I had more lowend from a jl wo series 12 but not accuracy. For the price range this sub is in I would highly recomend you shop around and let your ears do the picking there is much better to be had.

Strength:

Accuracy, Power Handling, Real small box capability, 2 or 4 ohm availability, everything about them basically

Weakness:

I have to sell them for $299.95 each.

I work at Soundtrack (aka Ultimate Electronics/Audio King)
and we sell higher end and middle end car audio. The Boston Pros are by far the best sub we carry. They just trash the Infinity Perfect and any other sub in it's class. Contrary to popular belief they will handle 1200 watts in the correct enclosure. People who complain that they don't reproduce bass under 30hz should know that they were designed that way because you can't really hear that low anyway. They do have a nice even gradual roll off at around 30 of about 2 decibels per octave. Anyone looking for a sub that plays lower isn't really being realistic as to what they can really hear. It is not possible for the majority of people to hear lower than 20hz anyway. You actually can barely hear 30hz no matter how low it is. these are a very accurate sub especially in a box of about .9 to 1.0 cubic feet of air space. Now if you're some suburban wigger buy some boomy JL to listen to your rap on these subs weren't meant for you, buy a bandpass a 200 watt amp and the JLs and you'll be beatin' up the street. If you want the music to sound like it was meant to buy to bostons.

Strength:

Awesome subwoofer, did extremely well in 1.0 cu ft enclosure with a little bit of polyfill. Excelent low end (about 24hz F3). Great Cosmetics. EXTREMELY accurate.

Weakness:

A bit pricey. Other than that, awesome.

I love this subwoofer, it's one of the best on the market IF you do your install correctly. Way to go Boston. If you're looking for an extremely accurate subwoofer, and money isn't an object, this is it.

Alumapro Alchemy (a little deeper going), Kicker SoloBaric D series (no where near as accurate), Orion XTR Pro (00, Not accurate as all, more pricey)

Model Reviewed: Boston proseries 12.52 1999

After months of research,I recently bought my car audio system.I decided to go with the boston proseries 12's for my subs. I matched it up with a P.O.S. mtx 225HO amp. This is supposed to be a high output amplifier, stable at 1/2 ohm. Yeah right - I should have done more research. While it produces a lot of power, it is not clean - if you are in to sound quality , don't go with MTX . Don't listen to anything "The Good Guys" say - They know nothing. These subs require lots of power. Clean power. I have blown up over 8 of them in the last year. Make sure you build the box to the exact specifications, 1 cubic foot, and air tight. If there is a leak, the sub will blow.I would not recommend using these subs in a sedan, or coupe. They sound much better in suv's, or hatchbacks.I'm sure I would be more pleased with these subs if I would have set the system up correctly the first time.they are good subs, bostons are the way to go for good sound quality. They arent too deep , so you might not like them if you listen to hip-hop. Whatever you do - don't use MTX amps, subs, or anything. It's ghetto sh_t.You may be interested to know that the cost price of these $300 subs is only $120.

Strength:

Good sound quality

Weakness:

overrated power handling
High F3 in reccomended box
Somewhat boomy
Dies EXTREMELY easy in a larger enclosure

This is an accurate woofer. It does not play very deep. I honestly expected more for the price($300). I managed to kill one in a 1.5 cubic foot sealed enclosure because it has less than HALF its rated power handling in a 1.5 cubic foot box. While Boston Acoustics doesn't reccomend it, I would have appreciated better honesty with the powerhandling. 1200 watts is highly unlikely even in the 1.0. If low bass isn't a concern but you want a tight, accurate woofer, this is a good bet. I returned it and went with Infinity Kappa Perfect. Much better sub.

Strength:

SOUND QUALITY (Yes, even from a sub, SQ is important)
TIGHT, DEEP, LOUD BASS
Nice screw-down wire connections
Solid as a rock, not a flimsy sub my any means
Power handling (~1250 watts each)

Weakness:

Power hungry, more so than a standard 12", but not nearly as much as a ground zero.

Got these right when they were released, actually got one, then the other about 2 weeks later due to low quantity. Just the one was impressive in its half of my 2 chamber (1 cu. ft. each) sealed box. Put that second one in, and it blew me away. Running 500 watts to each (put both 2ohm in series to make single 4 ohm load to orion 2250xtr). This runs them very nicely, but anything under 100w will bottom out. I'm talking good watts here, don't think that because your Jensen is rated 10 million watts it will handle these, you need good, raw, Orion, a/d/s/, Adcom, etc. power. Don't even think about porting your box, you'll blow the speakers in a matter of minutes. 1 cubic foot sealed is your only option. Combine them with some good EQ (Audiocontrol EQT) and you'll start hearing the individual strings on the bass guitar.

Bought two of these great woofers, and don't wan't to change back ever. These are great in every way. They have the kick and the sound that make the music really alive.....
And you allmost don't need any space.....only 1 ft3....yes it's true.
Recomended power is from 50-1200 watts. I use a Cadense Z1200 witch(or however it is spelled)gives me about 2 x 600 Watts at 2 ohm in stereo, or
1200 Watts bridged mono at 4 ohm, serial mounted.

It's worth listening to them....

I have gone heard a lot of Subwoofes JL, Fosgate (suck), Kenwood, Sony, Polk, Orion, Eclipse, Alpine, Soundstream, Vega's (also suck), Kicker, MTX, PPI, and a few others I am forgetting. These subs blew almost all them all away. Orion HCCAs came in a close second but I am a Sound Quality listner so Boston was the only way to go. Rich, smooth, and accurate, oh yeah did I mention hard hitting as a twenty pound sledge! Some say "there not as loud as other subs" whell thats right these are serious audio subs thats right an audio sub. Not some inacurate P.O.S. in a band pass box for max SPLs. These subs are incredibly loud it just takes more power to push em, Small seiled enclousure subs are going to be that way but I have Herd of a guy puting them in a fourth order band pass for spl and haveing and sounding perty nice. But I garentee put 1200 watts through 2 of em like I am and your passengers will complaining of ear pain if you crank it up. All I can say is WOW, if you really care about your car audio sound quality these speakers are it.

I can't say I've heard tons of woofers but I have heard a handful. I found a second-hand Boston Pro 12.5 for $100. I had heard good things about them so I picked it up. I threw it in the recommended 1.0 cubic foot sealed enclosure. I first pushed it with 250 watts off a PPI A200. It played fairly loud, clean and deep. I then hooked it up to my 700 watt PPI A600. It was INCREDIBLY loud. It stayed clean but played a whole lot louder. I'm into SQ so I put the bigger amp on my 3-way components. The system sounds very balanced and the bottum end sounds great with only 250 watts. I wonder if the people who say these woofers need at least 500 watts have even heard them with less power (or heard them at all for that matter.) With 500 watts you'd have plenty of SPL. With around 1000 watts (they can take 1200 watts RMS) even the most jaded of bass-heads would be impressed. If you're looking for dual-sub SPL numbers and great SQ, while still maintaining some trunk space, get a single 12.5 and feed it lots of power. For the others, a single 12.5 and 250-350 watts will give you an incredible bottum-end (I know mine does.) I haven't had the chance to compare it to its peers (CMP's, Exacts, Alchemies, 8800's.)
tms-electronics has them for $225/each

I HAVE BEEN AROUND THE AUDIO INDUSTRY FOR QUITE SOME TIME KNOW, AND HAVE HEARD SOME OF THE BEST SOUNDING AUDIO SYSTEMS. FOR INSTANCE, POLK MAKES A DECSENT SUB, AS WELL AS THE JL AUDIO W6, THE OLD LANZAR DC SERIES, CADENCE SUBS, AND ADS SUBS, TO NAME A FEW. BUT IN MY HONEST OPINION, THE BOSTON ACOUSTICS 12.5 (AND THE 12.4 FOR THAT MATTER), ARE THEE CLEANEST, TIGHTEST, MOST ACCURATE SUBS YOU CAN PURCHASE, AND TO ADD AN ADDITIONAL BONUS, YOU ONLY NEED 1 CUBIC FOOT OF SPACE TO DRIVE THEM. TO MAKE THINGS SHORT, RUN THESE SUBS WITH A CLEAN AMP(SUCH AS MCINTOSH, XTANT, MILBERT, ETC), AND YOU WILL HAVE A TRUE AUDIPHILE CAR SETUP. I DWOULD GIVE THEM 6 STARS BUT THEY ONLY ALLOW 5, WELL THANKS FOR LISTINING, OK BYE
