Strength:

money making machine

Weakness:

brutal on households with teenagers driving.

I've had Nationwide insurance for over 20 years with no claims. The rates started shooting up once my daughter became licensed to drive. After another driver pulled in front of my daughter causing a collision the rates skyrocketed. I switched insurance companies and saved over $900.00 a year for better coverage. My auto and homeowners through nationwide was lacking in some areas. So much for "on your side." So much for " preferred customer". So much for"multi-vehicle discounts."

I am done with Nationwide! I had my cars insured with them for over 20 years. Never had to use the insurance until a month ago when one of our cars got stolen from in front of our house.

First, they tell me my policy does not rental cars on a stolen car. Why am I paying a rental car option then??

My car was found, I filed a claim in order to get it fixed. The car has minimal steering wheel damage that our mechanic estimates would cost between $300 & $600 to fix.

Next, after 4 weeks of waiting, Nationwide finally gets back in touch with me and leave a message on my answering machine telling me they are writing my car off as totaled because it would cost $1500 to fix and in his opinion, my car is worth only $2500.

The only damage to my car is that it was hot-wired. I called my mechanic and he couldn't believe Nationwide!

I am done with Nationwide! I am getting my car back and paying for the repairs out of my pocket.

No ethics. Worst services. Only thing on their agenda is saving Nationwide's money. Can go to any level to protect that.

Worst ever car insuranceprovider. Can stoop to any level. AVOID even if its the last insurance you can get.

Uh, they answer the phone.

Weakness:

Recent "policy" changes have resulted in massive price increases, at least for us.

We have been customers of Nationwide Auto Insurance for years, but are done with them. Rate increases have gone absolutely nuts. For example, we have a 1989 Ford F150 on which we put 1-2k miles per year with home improvement projects and such. We have other cars for routine use. Last year the truck cost about $300 per six months for liability only coverage. This year they are increasing just the truck part to $841 per six months for the same minimal use. I've had other similar problems recently with them as well.

Just switched to State Farm and the State Farm price is $1000/six months less for our four vehicle, three driver household. that is big money.

Will try to avoid paying out any way they can.

Nationwide is the worst most unprofessional company I have ever dealt with. Before dealing with them I thought that every company required workers to have some type of training or some level of professionalism. I was involved in an auto accident and my husband was driving. To begin with I was in a wreck 550 miles away from my home and I was four months pregnant, there was some type of problem with my car rental through the insurance and I was stranded. When I discussed my claim with an agent and they discovered my husband was driving they began telling me that because my husband has an international drivers license they would not be able to cover the damage to our vehicle. My car is still parked 550 miles away and I'm paying a storage fee of $25 dollars every day, in addition I am in law school and am required to come up with the money to fix my vehicle, which is around $7,000. I have filed a complaint with the insurance commisioner and the ACLU. It was apparent in my case that once the agents found out my husband was from Pakistan they were no longer willing to help us. I have never felt so targeted and discriminated against in my life. When I asked agent Brett from Colombus Ohio who was on my side he stated "I cannot answer that question" Hopefully they will be brought to justice and I suggest to everyone DO NOT BE LEAD IN BY THEIR CHEAP PRICES,, YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU EVER NEED THEIR HELP!!!!

Weakness:

High prices, poor customer service, sloooow repairs.

I have had Nationwide insurance since I started driving (approx. 7 years) and though the rates were a bit high and the customer service was a bit lacking I'd never really had any major problems with them until I got into an accident with one of my previous vehicles. I was given a rental car for a week when my car was in the shop for a week and a half. They told me I would have to return the rental car after 7 days or pay for it myself no matter how long the vehicle took to repair. Keep in mind I'd been paying for full coverage for 6 years at this point.
My next major issue came when my brand new '05 mazda RX-8 was stolen from a local movie theatre. The car was found and taken to a repair shop the same day (Jan. 29th) and as of today (Feb. 28th) I still don't have my car back. It took over two weeks for nationwide to approve the repairs, then another week and a half for the shop they recommended to get the parts in. They offered me another week worth of rental car, which I refused.
I've decided that after this incident is taken care of that I'm going to be seeking another insurance company.

Weakness:

a lot of runaround, not really "by your side" like they claim. they felt more "over your shoulder" instead.

i had nationwide a few years back and not had any difficulties until my car was stolen from my parents house. nothing special regarding my red CRX; it was not "cherried out" or lowered, or race modified in any way. they reimbursed me the minimal amount for the vehicle but then tried to jack up my rates by claiming that my brother was a regular driver of the CRX (maybe cause it was stolen at my parents house?). i argued with them for over a month, stating that i and my brother were working on the passenger window and i had left it there for him to take it down to a nearby shop to have the window professionally worked on and replaced. anyway, somehow nationwide gets this idea that my brother must be a regular driver of my CRX and tries to jack up my premium rates and began demanding drivers information of my brother, and wants me to add him onto my insurance! in the end i bailed out by not staying a customer of nationwide, and went somewhere else... maybe not a better insurance co overall that i went to, but just in principle somewhere else.

A Nationwide covered Driver pulled out in front of my 2002 Taurus and totals it. I have been a Nationwide customer over 15 yrs. which you would think Nationwide would take care of a long time customer. Not so! I reported the accident to my agent and was given a number to call at Nationwide, I did & they got me a rental and spoke to my wife concerning her injuries. Gave her $500 and covered Dr. visit then offered the most unreasonable amt for our totaled car and advised the rental co. we had setteled & I should turn the car in within 3 days. We had not setteled & I still needed the rental but keeping it ment I covered the cost. I called my agent who had done nothing for me to this point and requested he call the adjuster which he did and the adjuster told him if I could find a car simular to mine at a higher amt. they would consider it. I found 17 so the adjuster offered more $, 500 more. Still not enough to buy a car but Nationwide insist that they found dealers that will sell a simular car for a "take price" much less than the advertised price. Although the adjuster could not guarantee the dealer would settle for the amt. offered to me I will need to negotiate with the dealer. Accident happened 8-24-06 it is now 9-20-06 & nothing settled. If I were to accept their unreasonable offer it would go away. I can only feel that Nationwide is intentionally making low offers hoping I will get tired and accept just to get it over with. Even the information from Nationwide listed cars costing more than they offered, even the average amt.of the cars they found was more than their offer. I am not requesting millions of dollars I just want Nationwide to restore me to the position I was in prior to the accident. We're talking less than $12,000.00 I have called me agent and informed him that Nationwide is acting in extermly bad faith (as I turned in the rental, not sueing over injuries)and that I am contacting the insurance commission to advise the commission of such actions by Nationwide. I am almost ready to hire a Lawyer and pay a fee just on principle. My 15 years with Nationwide have come to a close never to return. I'm sure my leaving will out a big dent in their revenue but oh well one can only do what one can.

Customer service, untimely delivery of payment

I never had any problems with Nationwide UNTIL I had to make a claim. My car was vandalized while parked on the street near my university (the passenger side door was keyed). I called and reported it as a comprehensive claim, but when the adjuster came to look at the car he included damage that had been on the car previously (which was nothing more than a paint scratch on the front bumper that was there when I bought the car) and called it a collision, which carries a $250 deductible vs. a $50 for comprehensive. I told them the damage on the bumper was NOT part of my claim, and the agent said I should leave it on there because then I would get a new bumper---they were encouraging me to commit insurance fraud! It also took TWO MONTHS before I got the check to repair the damages.

Once the claim was settled I switched to Geico, whom I've had no problems with, even though they cost slightly more. Nationwide then put me and my car on my parents' plan even though I didn't live at their house, and we had to fight with them for over a month to take me off, even after I faxed them a copy of my lease with my address, which was in an entirely different city from my parents! They demanded proof of my new insurance before they would take me off my parents' plan, and I told them it was none of their business who my new insurance coverage was through. I reported them to the Washington State Insurance Commissioner.

While they may have good prices, pray you never have to make a claim with them, because they will screw you over. They are definitely not "on your side."
