Rude/Insulting claims adjusters Failure to do what's right I resently was in an accident where the driver of the car that hit me was covered by Progressive Insurance. I was traveling down the highway at about 45 to 50 mph, when a car pulled out of a private drive and broadsided the motorcyle I was riding. The driver of the car was found at fault for failure to yield the right of way. The claims adjuster for Progressive took my statement which included how much I paid for the motorcycle which was only $200.00. I explained that the bike had been disassembled (including all of the wiring harness) and I had spent several days/weeks putting everything back together and repairing the original problem with the electrical system. I had also invested in having the bike registered, purchased insurance, and had it State inspected within a few days of the accident. After leaving the recorded interview, the adjuster had the nerve to offer me $200.00 for the bike and he would call it even. When I declined his offer, he he informed me that the bike wasn't worth anything and I wouldn't get a better deal than that. He later called me back while I was at work and insisted that I release the bike from the storage facility it was located so that he could have it moved 50+ miles away until I made a decision on accepting his offer or not. Three days later, I recieved a call from the adjuster offering me $1100+ for the motorcycle. I had looked on the web for information in regards to this particular bike and found that the typical market value ranged from $3200 to $4500. I expressed this to the adjuster and was told that they utilize the NADA blue book pricing and that because my motorcycle was in such bad shape (I disagree along with many others that had seen the bike), it's value was below the lowest retail listing. This adjuster has lied to me repeatedly, has insulted me almost everytime we've spoken, and has actually tried threatening me in order to process the claim. In addition to totalling out the motorcycle, I was sent to the emergency room with a broken thumb, road burns on my legs, hand, and head; and broken toes on both feet. I've had to cover most of the expenses with out-of-pocket money that I certainly can't afford or my health insurance. I was told that once everything has been taken care of and we can settle on the claim, I will be reimbursed. Sadly, all I ever asked for was that they cover the cost of the medical and to replace or repair my motorcycle; nothing more. |

None I can think of.
Weakness:
To keep costs low, they give "trade-in" value of the car if it were totalled. I have used Progrssive as my primary auto insurance carrier in the past and later went with Travelers at AAA because they offered a better package since I have more than one car. I have since been involved in an accident not my fault which totaled my car. The person who hit me was with Progressive and I am still using Travelers. Progressive was willing to accept liability for the accident since it was not my fault. What I learned was interesting. Progressive uses a different source for placing a value on a car. My insurance company, Travelers, was willing to give me $13,760 for my car and they use a company called Auto Source for appraising the car. This is what it would cost me to buy my car from a dealer. On the other hand, Progressive appraised the value using the lowest amount from the blue book as if it were being sold from a private seller or what the dealer would give for trade-in, which was a little over $9,000. So I had my insurance company take possession of my car for the higher amount and will let them fight with Progressive for their money back. I feel sorry for the guy who hit me because he may not like Progressive's evaluation of his car. |

Horrible customer service Rate increases that go by your zip code Rate increases based on discrimination On 07/26/04 my husband and I switched from our former insurance company to Progressive Insurance for our two vehicles because our former company kept raising our rates even though we both have perfect driving records. Today, 08/20/04 we received a phone call from Royce at Progressive Insurance to "verify" our information. We didn't understand this since the policy had already been issued almost a month ago but I went along with him and verified our address and employment information. During the course of this phone call, our zip code was verified and was found to be incorrect for our street address. Our city has three zip codes differing only by the last digit, and our zip code is for the suburban area. We were listed in the zip code for the downtown area of the city and when I corrected the zip code, I was informed by Royce that our insurance premium would be increased by $39.00 beginning next month because of our zip code. I asked why and I was told that it is because insurance rates are determined by zip code and that statistics show that there are more "problems" in our zip code. I questioned this since we live in an upscale area of town and the subdivision that we live in has almost no crime at all, no thefts, vandalism, etc. but the downtown zip code that we were listed in has a high crime rate including drugs, burglaries, vandalism, theft, car accidents, etc. and chances are that your vehicle will be broken into, vandalized, or stolen are a great deal higher in the downtown area. The newspaper for our town has a daily log of police reports and most all of them are in the downtown zip code where we were incorrectly listed as residing. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold. After five minutes, Royce came back on the line and stated that he talked it over with his supervisor and our rates wouldn't be raised "this term" but the next six month term the higher rates would be in effect. I stated that we feel that we are being penalized for living in a nice area and he denied that and said that he was sorry that we felt that way but we have to pay the higher rate. I said, "Let me get this straight. If we live in a nice, crime free area where people are very careful with their own and everyone else's vehicles, we have to pay $39.00 more than if we lived in an area where daily occurrences of theft, vandalism, and drugs are rampant and where most car accidents occur?" He stated that is correct. I told him that I wanted to talk to someone that could explain this method of pricing car insurance premiums to me because I didn't understand how rating a nicer area for higher premiums made any sense He refused to let me talk to anyone else, told me to have a nice day, thanks for choosing Progressive Insurance and hung up on me. In addition to the rudeness of the representative, it appears to us that we are being penalized because we live in a nice area and the insurance company obviously thinks that we have money so we get ripped off in this manner of discrimination. We are not rich, my husband is the only one in our household that is employed since my job was moved overseas and now I am a full-time college student. We don't have extra money, and are struggling to pay the bills each month. We are middle age so we are not young drivers that are reckless. We will be shopping for a new insurance company that rates on your driving record, not your zip code. It is a good thing that we don't live in zip code 90210! Highway robbery with rates They paid the other guy about $2000 to fix an already rusted up headlight. I also agree with the random rate hikes, in which I also got the "State raised rates, too bad" reply. They also punish you for not being able to cough up the rate hike money all at once and charge you 90% in installment fees!! Sorry kids- i am going somewhere that lets you pay by month because they understand you have a budge and they won't surprise you with $200 extra each time you get your renewal. Oh. And i called ot ask if they give discounts for taking Defensive driving (had to call twice to get an answer)... no they are just gonna raise your rates anyway. AND the woman pretty much said that until my accident dropped off they couldn't even look at other options. Byebye !! I am writing to express my displeasure with Progressive insurance. I was rearended by an uninsured driver, sustaining severe damage to my vehicle, and was forced to claim on my collision policy. I have a few problems with the claims process. First, I was told that my vehicle would total, then two days later it appeared that the adjusters had made a mistake in calculation. The car has been in the body shop for about five weeks now. I'll give them the benefit of the fact that there is a long wait for VW part. However, quite puzzling to me was the fact that my car would not start after the accident and Progressive chose to have all the body work done before getting a mechanic to run diagnostics on the engine, making the duration of the repairs even more uncertain. Currently I have been without my vehicle for nearly 6 weeks (I fortunately was able to borrow a vehicle to use during the course of the repairs). I was constantly being given different information about completion date by the body shop and the adjusters. My claims adjusters were difficult to reach, and once I got in touch with them, they were quite curt and acted as though I was putting them out simply by questioning them about the condition of my car. If my car is not in excellent shape when I get it back, I will be very disappointed. I am not happy with the manner in which my claim has been handled. |

Too many to list. Progressive is terrible. With the start of my past two six month renewels, I recieved huge rate increases. After calling them, the rep claimed flooding in Houston forced the rate along with higher costs of doing business in my region. I live in Dallas!!! I have a spotless driving record with no accidents and had been with them for a 18 months. I canceled my policy and switched to AAA. Run from progressive and never look back. |

Weakness:
Rates way too high Auto insurance rates appear to be based on credit report from the Experian service, not driving history. My current auto insurance is up for renewal on 2/28/04, so I started shopping for a better rate. I compliment Progressive on their slick TV advertising, easy to use web site, and prompt response; however, their rates just don't cut it. Presently, I pay $940.71 for two vehicles for myself and my wife and our current company has been paying a dividend of between 2 and 5% per year for about the past 10 years. We have not had an accident claim since 1991 and have never had any moving violations. Progressive quoted me $1280 (36.1% more!)for identical coverage. Interestingly, they included a "Credit Inquiry Report" with their quote. In the credit report, there was an "unfavorable" notation that "no history of car loans or leases was provided" even though I leased my vehicle from 1997 - 2003 and now have a car loan on it since 6/03, which does appear on my consolidated credit report. The reported information was from Experian, and they, indeed, did not have any information about the lease or loan. That information appeared only on the Trans-Union report. My bottom line here is that this insurer is one of those who apparantly considers credit history to be more important than driving record when quoting rates and they get their credit data only from Experian. So... check your Experian credit report and credit score before bothering with this company. BTW, my Experian score was above 750 and I still did not qualify for a very good rate! If they cut back on the slick advertising (I really liked the one with the woman on the "instant voodoo" site doing nasties to her "cheating boyfriend") they would undoubtably be able to offer more competetive rates. When I politely declined their offer, I received a response within an hour, so they do actually respond to prospective customers even when the prospects have declined. |

Only slightly comparable rates
Weakness:
Unwarranted rate increases, does not value customer Progressive is worthless. I just received a $120 rate increase for my 6 month premium. After calling them, the represenative explained this is a regional increase due to their cost of doing business in my region. I have a spotless driving record with no accidents, and have been with Progressive (sticking it out) for a year. Clearly, this is not a company interested in providing a service to its customers, more than a company only interested in providing profits for themselves. This is not the first time these crooks have raised the premium without providing an explanation. If it were not for their only slightly-comparable price advantage in my case and law requiring car insurance, I would quickly cancel this poor service. It is a shame companies like this are still in business. |

Crooks. They sign you up on one price, then increase your rate by a large amount. Avoid these guys at all cost. See also www.progressive-stinks.com. These guys are crooks. They raised my insurance two months after I signed up by 400% (yes, from $750 to $2700 a year - and no, I had no tickets, no accidents, no claims - this came out of the blue). Of course, I cancelled the same day I got their ridiculous invoice, and signed up with another company. But that was not the end. Progressive proceeded to charge me the $2700 rate from the day I signed the $750 contract. Of course, I refused to pay. Now I have a negative mark on my credit rating. These guys will steal you blind if you give them a chance. Similar Products Used: Allstate. No problem. |

Nasty reps(claims adjusters), misleading information, heavy handed, unprofessionalism... A strong word to the wise...be prepared to 'reap the whirlwind' if you ever have to rely on Progressive for any accident claim. I signed up with them almost a year ago at the behest of my agent. They never had any issues with me paying my premium up front and in full and in adavance. However, I was recently involved in a minor accident where another car veered into my lane while I was attempting to pass. Though the police inferred I was at fault, I am in the process of contesting that. But...my complaint deals with another dimension entirely. The accident in question transpired away from home. I reside in PA but make frequent visits to NJ owing to the fact my friends and family are based there. It was during such a visit this accident transpired. When I went to make a call regarding the accident claim, the Progressive agent took the required information and stated that a claims adjuster would be contacting me the next day and also asked for a secondary number to reach me. I specified a time and a place to do so since I was away from home. Turns out the adjuster called at a time of their choosing and contacted my father's residence. He had no idea who was contacting him and was asked by said adjuster of my whereabouts. My father mistakenly stated that 'he lives here'(in NJ) as opposed to my residence in PA owing out of confusion and that I do spend a good deal of time in NJ(including working there in the summer). This aroused the suspicions of the adjuster and I contacted him at his behest. Thinking he was eager to get my information regarding the accident, it ended up turning into an 'interrogation session' questioning the validity of my residency in PA! I told the adjuster that I was a bonifide resident of the address of which my policy was registered to and that my father owned the house of which I along with my grandfather reside in. I relocated there about a year ago to help him out and established my residency there, and of course I am licensed and insured in the state of PA. However, since I make frequent visits to my former residence in NJ(I have 2 friends who rent an apartment there I used to room with and stay with from time to time)as well as my parents and siblings, I am now under suspicion of being a valid resident of my primary residency! The adjuster was rude, abrupt, snarky, and dismissive...and inferred that he would conduct a 'thorough' investigation of the veracity of my residency. After so much of this, I told him that we were supposed to be discussing my accident and not of this nonsense of where I resided! That portion of the conversation was almost an afterthought. The rep concluded I would be found at fault(the other driver struck my rear without using a turn signal or braking)AND stated that if no 'sufficient' proof could be established of my residency in PA, I would be liable for any damages if found culpable. Ludicrous! Also, at the very least, I am likely to be dropped for 'garaging'(don't worry, after such a hostile reception I *WILL* be dropping them in any event). Needless to say, my lawyer will be in touch with Progressive and regardless of how things turn out, I plan on spreading the word of the substandard, abrasive, and devious tactics this company has deployed. Forget the lure of low rates. When push comes to shove, Progressive becomes Oppresive. Similar Products Used: AIS(should be renamed 'ASS'), State Farm(decent company, why did I leave them?) |
