Strength:

Polite, efficient representatives. Not the most expensive.

Weakness:

pricey. Not enough reigns on money grubbing agents in Fremont, Ohio. Shame, shame.

I first purchased Progressive thru my local agent 8 years ago. My driving record was only ''fair'' due to accidents in which the other driver was at fault, and cited. Progressive''s covered was fair, and prices ''fair'' (by insurance co. standards.) When price shopping in April, 2001, the 800 number Progressive customer service rep. told me that my rates should be coming down in 6 months more, due to my driving record coming clean. I was told the same thing in the fall of 2001. When price shopping 2 weeks ago, my agent (Welty Financial, in case any N.Ohioans read this,) offered me a coverage increase and a 37% cost decrease, only after I told them that the competition beat them in price and coverage. Upon hearing this, I conferred with American Family Insurance, who indicated that I was in a higher ''rate'' than I should be, and offered better coverage, and an even cheaper rate. The next day, the Progressive agent asked who the competition was. I refused to say (like I''m going to screw myself to get the MINIMUM savings ?) The agent then told me over the phone that he didn''t want my "type of person" with his agency!!! What is my "type of person"? The type who won''t hand over wads of cash without asking any questions? Must be. In all fairness to Progressive, when we did have a claim or benefit from their ''roadside'' service, the Progressive rep''s (not my former agent) were quick, polite, and gave me no hassle about paying for covered incidents. Since Progressive would NOT re-write me at a cheaper rate, bypassing my agent, I am now with American Family Insurance with more coverage, and paying 50% less. Also, since getting the runaround from Progressive and Welty Financial, I changed my coverage in the last week before my coverage ran out, to force them to give me $5 back. I''m sure it cost them more than $5 to deal with that, and I hope it comes right out of the agent''s pocket.

Strength:

Friendly, helpful customer service. They offer a discount if you pay the premium in full by the anniversary date. Twenty-four hour, seven days a week toll free number for policy questions.

I took out my first Progressive policy on 5/30/2000. I paid an annual premium of $1,697 and listed myself and my 17-year old daughter as drivers. Five months later, my ex-husband bought our daughter a ''94 Eagle Talon; I added it to my policy and Progressive sent me a check for $111.00 because I qualified for their multi-car discount. When my policy renewed in May 2001, my annual premium was $1,490.00. So, despite my daughter wracking up an accident in Oct. ''00, and despite inflation, my premium was $96.00 less than the year before. In August ''01, I added my 22-year old son''s ''92 Dodge Dakota to my policy, and Progressive billed me $220 to add the truck from Aug. ''01 to May ''02. In December ''01, I dropped the Eagle Talon, and Progressive sent me a prorated check for $12.00 (which I thought was on the low side). I''ve called Progressive at least four times (usually really late at night!) and each time I''ve talked with courteous, helpful, knowledgeable, friendly young ladies who really seem to like their job and enjoy helping -- so I''d give customer service a 10-star rating. It''s sad to read about the poor experiences the rest of you have had. Even with my daughter''s accident, Progressive handled it in stride. I''m getting ready to renew my policy; the annual premium is now $1,559 for the Altima and Dakota, but my policy cost has gone up only a couple dollars. I was thinking of trying to find something cheaper, but now after looking at our policy history, I think I''ll stick with Progressive

Weakness:

Horrible customer relations in West Des Moines Iowa, Company motto must be "Who can we screw today?", Very poor integrity, CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED FOLKS.

BUYER BEWARE!!! You might save a few bucks a month but believe me these jokers will nickel and dime you to death in the end. My wife was involved in an accident recently(3 months after having a C section) and suffered internal bruising from a seat belt. Our Progressive rep left a voice mail for my wife, and in so many words very rudely called her a "liar". When confronted in person with his supervisor present he completely denied everything. You should have seen his face when i handed our cell phone to his supervisor and asked him to listen to the message. Of course Progressive came out on top in the end by using refurbished and used parts on my leased truck(that is not returning my vehicle to pre-accident contition). I pay outrageous premiums and get nothing in return except a chapped arse.

Weakness:

Poor customer service. Was never called back when I voiced concerns. I just got a higher bill in the mail

I was treated poorly by progressive. I was involved in an accident in a parking lot with another progressive driver. In my opinion I was at equal fault with the other driver. When making the report with progressive, I told the truth, admitting to half of the blame. The other driver lied and made up a witness.

Strength:

Rates were reasonable enough when I had coverage.

Weakness:

Dishonest business practices. Unwilling to acknowledge errors.

UNSCRUPULOUS, VINDICTIVE, LIBELOUS, UNETHICAL! They cancelled my policy because I had the audacity to move 30 miles across a state line, then invited me to reapply. I found a better company (with a LIVE agent)and a better rate. Six months later, Progressive billed me RETROACTIVELY for 6 mos. coverage! (6 mos. previous, while I was covered by the other carrier!). After much dispute, they asked for MANY documents from me, most of which were of THEIR generation! After I provided all of these as requested, they turned my fictitious debt over to a real collection agency and reported me to the credit bureaus! They have even carried the vindictive assault forward, reattaching my credit file when the credit bureaus acknowledge my evidence and remove it.

I HAVE HAD TWO ACCIDENTS WHILE INSURED WITH PROGRESSIVE, AND THEY HAVE CAME OUT TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE NOT ONLY THE SAME DAY BUT WITHIN A FEW HOURS. AND BOTH TIMES, THEY HAVE GIVEN ME AN ESTIMATE AND A CHECK TO HAVE THE VEHICLE FIXED ON THE SPOT!! I COULD HAVE NOT ASKED FOR BETTER SERVICE. I READ ONE REVIEW ABOUT HOW A MAN HAD POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT I HAVE ADDED DRIVERS, CARS, CHANGED LIMITS, ETC. OVER THE PHONE, IN ONE PHONE CALL, VERY SIMPLE!! I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THEM.

Weakness:

MY RATES WENT UP A LITTLE AFTER 2 ACCIDENTS, BUT I HOPE THEY DON''T GO UP ANYMORE NEXT RENEWAL!

Strength:

They only look at violations for the past 35 months while most insurance companies go back 60. Very easy to complete billing and policy updates over the internet. Fast quotes.

Weakness:

None so far. I've been reading about other consumers experiencing unexplained rate hikes after a year or so. I hope thats not the case.

This is my first insurance policy I've had without my parents. Proving prior insurance was a pain buy after that its been pretty good. Customer reps I've spoken to have been very friendly. I have several violations over the past 3 years so I was happy with the premium.

Geico. Fair quotes but they make you go to an autobody of their choice; where they use aftermarket parts and cut corners on repairs.

Missing in Action claims representatives! They call you when they want to; and have a DON't BOTHER ME attitude.

On January 24, 2001 I had an accident. A guy speeding in a Porsche took a stop sign and hit my car on the driver's side. I had the clear right of way! They other guy even got the ticket.

When the Progressive Claims Response unit got to the scene the rep. was well aware of my injuries--I was bleeding from my right hand, had a concussion, a broken thumb, and I could barely see out of my left eye. So when I asked him to hurry as much as possible so that I could get to the hospital, he told me to wait becuase he wanted to take care of the other driver because he had a $300,000 high exposure policy.

When Progressive eventually called me, the rep. told me that Progressive had determined that I was 20% responsible for the accident. I was in shock! Where does Progressive get the audacity to go above and beyond the law and try to pin the responsability fo the accident on me! So, after a heated argument the rep. finally realized that I was well aware of my rights and that I was going to cause Progressive some serrious problems. So, after all that they finally deiced to OBEY the law and pin 100% of the responsability on the other driver.

What Progressive was trying to do was to show that on this claim they saved 20% on the other driver's "high exposure" policy. Oh, and to top it all off, they have refused to paymy medical bills becasue I have health insurance. Progressive wants me to pay them a $2,000 deductible before they even consider paying for my medical expenses.
