they screw you hard!

They refuse to fix my truck right. I pay over $100 dollars a month for insurance and they want to bandage the massive dent in my boxside. If I had money I would sue. How do you think they can aford all the t.v ads and the fancy vehicles? They brag about how fast they can give you your money, but the reason for this is so that you cash the check before you realize you've been screwed. I haven't cashed the $180 ceck yet for my mangeled boxside. Any suggestions? The acctual body shop est. was $1500. Do not buy this so called insurance. This is legalized crime!

Initially, very cheap for OK coverage

Weakness:

raised the rates without any change in status

I got a great deal at $479 for 12 months. But now that it's time to renew, they are asking for $698 for 12 months, and I didn't have any claims or tickets, etc that would justify the price hike. My boyfriend renewed a couple of months ago before they raised their rates and only paid $2 more than the year before. Now I'm looking for different insurance, if I can still find something cheaper (besides GEIKO that I hear is a sham)....

Weakness:

Poor phone support and hard to get through.

I found out I could get twice the coverage at a little cheaper price through American Family so I wanted to cancel my policy with Progressive. At that time I found out there is a $50.00 fee for breaking the contact. What contract? They told me to look in the policy they supposable sent me some time after I signed up with them, on page 34 or 35 it stated that there is a $50.00 fee for early cancellation. I was never told this or received any papers other then my renewal bill. Seems pretty cooked to me. If they can do that, hard telling what else they can and would do.

Strength:

Fancy commericals, easy to get insurance via web site

Weakness:

Unfriendly customer support. Not willing to be flexible with the rules for good customers.

My wife's car was covered initially through Progressive.

First of all, she got a fairly cheap rate. During this time, her friend borrowed the car, and hit a parked car. Her friend payed for the damage to the other party but somehow news of the accident got back to Progressive (probably from a police report, not sure).

She cancelled the policy for 6 months while she wasn't using the car and then when she tried to get a bare bones policy (10-30 liability only) from the web site again, we got a rude awakening in the form of a huge rate increase. It at least doubled. This for an accident that her friend caused, they didn't pay out on, and we promised her friend would never drive the car again. We did it anyway since they offer immediate coverage from the web site. They said we did need to send some kind of DMV driving information to them.

Well, we forgot to send this information. When I went to their web page to check on her policy, it said it was cancelled. Surprised, I called their unfriendly service number and they said they hadn't received the information and cancelled the policy much short of the term I had payed for (3 months of 6). They then deducted, from the money I had payed originally, a $100 reinstatement fee (or something ridiculous like that). I couldn't believe that they would even have this fee for returning customers. They even ended up billing us for the difference. Something like $1.10. Forget it!

I'm just thankful I never had to make a claim with these guys!

Strength:

Thought the company was great when I didn't have to deal with it at all...

Weakness:

Started having a ton of problems when I had to do a simple adjustment. Got married and wanted to combine insurance (wife already used Progressive for her car as well). After calling SIX times within a 1.5 week period (including twice when the different reps told us we would need to call back and get a quote using the other person - apparently going from mine to hers may not cost the same as hers going to mine), I finally called back to make sure everything was set. After all this, they then told me that "some" of the conversations had been typed into the record, but that no action had been taken. After she says she switched it, she then tells me that there's a $100 charge for closing an account. I ended up insisting on talking to a manager and explaining that I'm obviously not closing anything, we're just combining, and she finally waived the fee. We were then told my wife would also have to call to cancel her policy. Well, about 2 months after she called, we got a bill showing that they were now charging us not only for my policy which now included my AND her vehicle, but also her vehicle AGAIN under her policy! When we called to let them know the mistake, they said they couldn't do anything about it! We finally told them we had enough and asked to cancel all the policies, and she said not only would we be paying ahead for the month on both policies (how can the same car be covered twice????), but that we would each be charged a $100 dollar fee! They were actually expecting us to pay almost $285 to cancel our policies!

I urge everyone to strongly comparison shop before getting a policy - and find out exactly what their cancellation policy is! If Progressive was completely screwed up, unorganized, and completely infuriating for such a stupid thing as combining policies, I wasn't even going to dare to chance their "service" when it came to actually trying to submit a claim.

Switched to American Family -- not only are we paying for both our cars what we were paying for one at Progressive, but it's invaluable to have ONE rep. we can go to that knows who we are, we can contact all the time, but knows our policy like the back of his hand.

fast quote, website tools, that's about it.

Weakness:

Incompetant, unprofessional and SLOW reps. Nightmare claims service.

Had an awful experience with PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE. I was involved in an out-of-town accident, calling the accident claims department I was put on hold for an unacceptable amount of time and I was using someone else's cell phone.
The claims rep tried to set me up with a car rental, but I ended up dealing with the rental company myself (rep was out to lunch) and was stranded in a small town for an hour and a half.
My car was supposed to be towed from the towing yard to a body shop and inspected there by a claims adjustor that same day as told. It was done four days later.

Communications from PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE was minimal. It took an average of three voice mail messages and almost three days for someone to call me back. I had to call them numerous times to remind them what to do -- I was following the list of services on the PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE website.
My car was deemed totalled and they gave me a very low value for my vehicle. I later demanded a copy of the car valuation report and later found numerous errors that greatly affected its value.

Meanwhile I received in the mail (no phone call) from my rep that the other party is considering sueing me for additional damages that exceeds my coverage. After 5 days of being a nervous wreck, I later found out that this letter was common precautionary procedure by PROGRESSIVE, and infact the other party did not express any interest in sueing or seeking additional damages.

An adjustor finally called me just to obtain a Power of Attorney and the Ownership papers so that they could buy back the car from me. He asked that I get the documents prepared and sent overnight and return the car rental since we had settled on a value of the car (According to PROGRESSIVE I was supposed to return the rental THREE days AFTER a CLAIM settlement, not a car value settlement), and said that my check will be sent out that day. I followed his instructions thinking that the claim will be settled soon and I will get my check for my totalled car -- I had purchased a new car that same week and needed the money very soon.
I returned the rental and took delivery of my new car, luckily my dealership was understanding enough of my situation and let me take delivery of the car and pay later when I get the check from PROGRESSIVE.

It has been almost a month now since the accident and my claim still has not been settled/closed -- a Dr.Jekyll-Mr.Hyde contrast to the PROGRESSIVE TV commercials claiming they could settle a claim immediately and on the spot.
I feel very guilty for my dealership since I am still driving around in my new car still unpaid, eventhough they know my situation.
I warn anyone NOT to choose PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE due to their unprofessional and incompetant reps, service and practices -- their quotes are not that much cheaper either.

Getting involved in an accident is bad enough, but having to deal with PROGRESSIVE INSURANCE on top of that is incredibly stressful and a nightmare.
I also suggest dealing with a local independant insurance broker, since they could handle any problems with the insurance company for you and usually get things done since they have the power of turning away potential customers, or even current customers easily.
The extra few dollars a month could save your sanity!!!
I now learn not to buy from TV commercials and buy from well respected, proven, and established businesses.

I switched to progressive from Infinity after they raised my rate by $800, probably due to a small claim I sent them. With hinde sight I should have coughed up the cash my self and not have the claim on my record.
Initially my rate at Progressive was $1600/year. Unfortunatly I had a major accident 4 weeks before policy renewal which resulted in a major claim. The claim was handled in a about 2 days and the rate went up something like $200 so I figured I was lucky.
Drove around for a year with no tickets, accidents and claims. Time to renew my policy and now my rate rose $300 to $2100/year. Huh? You get punished more for not filing claims than you do for filing a claim. What will it be next year? $400 increase? Needless to say I'm seeing if there isn't anything a bit cheaper out there.

I don't have progressive insurance. Thank goodness!
My car was part of a 4 car pile up ***2+ months ago in Feb !!***The cause of the accident was a driver who had Progressive, and didnt see all the vehicles stopped.( never touched his breaks he said) Their first mistake was telling us as there are 4 cars involved, there won't be enough money to go around for everyone...Why don't we go to our own insurance? This was 2 weeks after finially getting someone here to look at all the damaged vehicles. As our car wasn't the newest , the rep. didn't think they would have any $ to fix ours.I had to keep calling as, heaven forbid, they should call us. Weeks ago they stated until a title was sent to them on one of the cars, they couldn't do anything. Last week they promised to stay better in touch. This week( when I called again ) he will get around to checking why there still is no title. He suggested we go out and buy another car. Hard to do when you don't know what you'll have to spend . He estamates we should get anywhere from 100.00 to 5000.00 to work with
( narrows it down ?) That we have been 2 months without a vehicle is our fault...just go buy one, you will get a check eventually ..... He promised to find out about the title some time this week ( didn't I hear that last month?) So still no car, still no repairs, still no estimate , no farther now than I was 2 months ago......Yup...that's what I call speedy!

Strength:

Price is their inticement.

Weakness:

They are deceptful and go to any length to deny coverage to their insured.

Bought Progressive Insurance because it was a good price. Learned that they can afford low prices because they deny claims. Had an accident in which the police investigated and found the other vehicle at fault. They said police make mistakes and refused to pay the claim. I learned a hard lesson and will never do business with them again. I suggest you pass on this company, because there is no free lunch and they won't be there when you need them most.
