Falken ZE-502 ZIEX Tires

Falken ZE-502 ZIEX Tires

DESCRIPTION

These ultra performance tires take driving to a whole new level. Extra wide, straight grooves, combined with twin traverse grooves provide excellent wet performance, water disbursement and help prevent hydroplaning. Twin straight rib design enhances handling, while A.P.P.L.E.-designed noise treatment helps filter out road noise. Rim protectors guard against friction on wheels, and a dual tread compound provides split-second response and grip.

Strength:

Cheap price, interesting look.

Weakness:

Moderate traction and steering response dry, poor in all categories wet.

I replaced my stock Michelin Pilot SX tires on my Volvo Turbo with these Falken tires. They are a bit quieter than the Michelins and wear slower, but do not give the same precision in steering response. Dry traction is ok, and wet traction is poor. These are not high performance tires that some salesman would try to sell you because of their Z-rating. They are fine for the family sedan.

Strength:

Good dry weather handling.

Weakness:

Horrible wet weather control. Very hard material - didn't absorb bumps very well even with a 50 profile tire, also made the tires very load at high speeds.

Good tire for the price, but if you can find them get the Kumhos.

Strength:

Good grip.
Look pretty flash too.
I like the way the tread looks.
Seem to give the little 15-inch wheels I have a good look.
Lasting for a long time, with no real wear.

Weakness:

NOISY.
You people overseas have to remember that our roads here in Oz are basically tar, and when wet, they lay granite, or something similar, on top of that. The roads are rough and noisy. Most car reviews in Australia are always very critical of NVH levels, mainly due to our poor road surfaces.

Plus we have many, many dirt roads, and it is nothing for cars to spend the majority of their time on dirt. My 205 does spend a little bit of time on dirt, but mostly on asphalt.

I love these tyres.

They were pretty cheap, it cost me Australian $440 to get four new tyres, plus them balanced and fitted. I was pretty impressed. The Goodyear’s we get out here wear too fast, they have heaps of grip, but wear pretty fast. I wanted a performance tyre but not at a huge cost.

The 205 GTi is a great handler. Read some reviews on them at drive.com.au.

They are a pretty legendary car (the first of the 'hot hatches'); it weighs about 900 kilos and has a 1.9 litre engine which pumps out about 85-90 kilowatts of power. So it moves. It is nothing to have the wheels spinning on the change from 3 to 4. As such it is pretty hard on front tyres being FWD. And the engine has heaps of torque.

The Falkens are great, they've just had their first rotation, front to rear, and they are holding up well. No loss of tread, but still noisy.
I travel about 400 kms round trip every second or third weekend to my girlfriends parents place in rural VIC, and the tyres have worked well in the wet when visibility was that bad, I couldn't see the bonnet. No aquaplaning. That's a great feeling isn't it? I was expecting it, but the Falkens certainly do get rid of a lot of water when wet.

Driving on some great twisty bits of road, found them to be more than adequate, they held up well, with a minimal of squealing, and heated up well to provide better grip.

They are a firm compound in order to make them last, and I hope they do, because I am a firm believer in these tyres now (especially after some really scary night driving in the wet, they helped to keep the car on the road and pointing in the right direction).

I'm sorry so many people are complaining about them. Perhaps its wrong tyre for wrong car/road conditions. But they seem to be great on the 205, out here in Oz. Perhaps they are more suitable to the European sports cars than US.

My next set of tyres will be Falkens.

Strength:

Adequate grip, very predictable near the limits, great look, sidewall doesn't fold over at all in cornering.

Weakness:

Terrible in rain.

For dry roads they perform very good overall. The grip isn't the best I've ever felt but it is good enough. The tires howl louder and louder as you near their limits, which makes it very easy to know when you shouldn't push any farther. Unfortunately, on wet roads I realized they aren't good at all after having a little brush with a tree. Very good summer tire to have.

Strength:

These tires grip far better than any tire I've had to date. On top of that they give me a very quiet ride, which I didn't expect when buying the tires.

Weakness:

Although they grip very well, when your at the limit, they don't give you any warning. I'm coming around a mildly sharp turn, and I'm really hustling the car, however half way through the car just spun around, the tires gave me no warning of when they are about to go, they just go.

Although these grip the best out of any tire I've owned, the fact that they give me no warning before they let go, is disconcerning. However they do grip hard, and turn hard, and give me a quiet ride.
If your looking for an ultra performance tire thats going to grip like mad, and be very responsive to the driver, don't get these, after all they we're only 50 bucks each, what do you expect????
However, if your looking for a good performance tire, that has good wet and dry traction, and is very reasonably priced, by all means buy these.

Weakness:

Very loose in the wet, would not hold onto corners whould go into a 4 wheel drift both wet and dry.

not as good as cheap brands that are similar eg. Ultra HPR . I drive for a living and would recommend them for good wearing tyres but not for grip.

I put my stock wheels back on, so I put some Falken Ziex Z rated on the wheels to save some money.
I have NO traction. If I even depress the gas pedal slightly hard I peel out. I did not have this problem with the SP8000's that were on before.
I would never buy these again. Spend the extra $ and get some real Z rated performance tires. These are a joke.

Strength:

I've had these tires on my Porsche for about a year and a half. The FIRST thing i noticed is that the grip just blew away the goodyears and Pirellis i had been using before that. Total control over the car no matter the road texture, or how wet or dry it was. I was skeptical because nobody I knew used them, but after using them, i was so thrilled by the performance that i got a set for my Scirocco 16V.

Weakness:

There are no weaknesses with this tire that I have found while driving through every kind of surface. The only downside (if you can call it that) is that my Goodyear Eagles were easier to 4-wheel drift. The Falkens have so much more grip that i don't get a bark, or a squeal, or anything out of the tires where i used to slide through a turn before. But grip is what we're after... isn't it?

These tires are the best I have ever used on my car. I do not recommend something unless I myself have used them for a while. These tires are SO MUCH more cost effective than the ones I was buying before, and they last so much longer! In weather that would lift the front of my Porsche up due to water on the road, the Falkens grip like it was dry. Braking in the wet is phenominal! When you heat them up, they put to shame the expensive tires that you might have been looking at to purchase. Don't waste your money on some other tires you saw on a show car that gets driven 3 times a year for 3 miles a trip. Get these Falkens, and then TRY to break the grip on them where your old tires used to slide all around. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Handles like a wet dream, wet traction is excellent, dry traction is better, quiet ride, very good bang for the buck, looks like a mirror with Black Magic tire gloss.

Weakness:

Ride was rough, well of couse they were 205/50/15's, thats the way it is supposed to be. Oh weaknesses um........ none zip, zilch.

Buy then, you won't be disappointed unless you been pampered by $300 plus tires. Recommended to people who want performance at aroud $400 for 4.

Weakness:

The dry and wet handling is ok, but you can be much better with other brands, for about the same price.

If given the chance, I would not buy the ziex again. After using a set of nittos, the falken seem so crappy! Once again, they handle better than most stock tires, but nowhere as near as the nittos. They won't go hydroplanning easily, but if you are hard on the brakes be VERY careful if wet! They block very easily.
