Model Reviewed: 1999 BMW M-Roadster

Strength:

The H&R Sport Spring for the BMW M-roadster provides 'point and squirt' handling capabilities; must use with good performance shocks (Koni Sport, Bilstein, etc.) and strut tower brace to maximize the spring's capabilities. Handling is now crisp, predictable, and 'off the chart' for a road-going car.

Weakness:

A little disappointed in the drop at the front. Needs to be appoximately 1/2' lower for proper 'eyeball appeal'. Unfortunately, since the struts don't offer an adjustment, we're stuck with the 'front-in-the-air, ready-to-pounce' look!

Been doing suspensions on BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, and Mercedes since 1973; including torsion bars, coils, and coil-overs from factory racing departments, tuners, specialty and oem manufacturers...H&R takes a back seat to none.

Strength:

Great drop, decent spring rate, handles awesome on OE shocks!

Weakness:

Might be a little too soft if you compete in SCCA Solo2 competition.

The H&R Sports gave me a very agressive drop on my GSR, just what I was looking for. It kept my camber within reasonable specs too. The ride was very good and just what I wanted. However, I compete in a numerous amount of SCCA Solo2 events, and these springs weren't what I expected them to be. They are EXCELENT daily driver springs, though. Upon turning, they become just a little to soft for me. A slightly higher spring rate would do just fine.

Ride quality is unsurpassed, Simply the best ive used. The price point is the most economical out there! PLUS your car won't be hoppin around like a kangaroo on crack!

Weakness:

Zero

Well, Boys and Girls here's my two cents! I put these on my Japanese weapon of choice, and i'll tell ya they are the Sh#t! Beyond excellent ride quality, as steering, handling are very neutural and predictable. Triple digit speeds are firm & rock solid. My car has about two fingers of wheel gap, it looks realistic and functional. Simply put, it responds IN PHOQEN SANE, point n shoot! Brake dive is next to zero, transitions from hard cornering are razor sharp. Chassis flex is less noticable too. Ive got em paired up with tokico blues as Im more than pleased by this setup. If you are searching for a true performance inhancing spring, this is definately your best bet. Many companys use tactful jargon and hype to pursuade the public in purchasing their product. H&R may not be known for outlandish ads with prepubecent ladies in suggestive poses and flosslike outfits that are generated to cloud our thoughts and keep us from making educated selections of quality components and suspension hardware. What's apparent is by the way my automobile performs that H&R's time is spent at the track & on the street, not in some photoshop studio in front of a computer eating coffee and donuts.

Perfect height, firmer ride with NO harshness, excellent matched with Tokico Illuminas

Weakness:

None so far.

These springs are excellent. I have them paired with Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable shocks and WOW!!! What a difference! The drop is just as advertised, about 1.5"F/1.2"R. Inspires confidence on the highway. Combination of lowered height + increased stiffness allows me to go 100mph+ like its my job. Accord Coupe's have huge wheel wells, and these springs make the car sit perfect like "factory sport". The H&R OE Sports don't lower the car enough to notice and the H&R Race are too stiff for my taste. I pull up to other Accords and they look absolutely "lifted". A must have if you are running +2,+3 wheels/tires. Although alignment wasn't too bad, I a camber kit in the rear was all that was needed to bring alignment back to factory specs.

H&R''s history of making quality suspension equiptment. The finish on mine are hold up pretty well.

Weakness:

These springs are great. The ride quality is excellent. I have been driving on them with the factory shocks for about 6 months and it still feels good. The 1.75 in the front and the 1.5 in the rear are the perfect height for me to drive just about any where and not have to worry about scraping the ground.

The forward rake compensates for the weight carried in the rear.

Weakness:

Best springs out there for Honda''s. The front is a littler lower than the rear but if you are planning to get a subwoofer or any other type of audio equipment in the trunk then it will even it out. Or if you have a fat friend sitting in the back. Overall, better springs than the Eibach Sportlines because there is no sagging. When I first had the Eibach''s, the drop was great. After putting in my subwoofer and a couple of months of driving, the back was lower than the front giving it a really uneven look

Good performance with great looks and a fantastic price.

Weakness:

Expect a rougher ride than stock.

They are good springs at a great price. The amount of drop is perfect for my driving purposes. I still find them too "bouncy" but much less so than the Air Racing coilovers I use to have. I’m using them with KYB AGX shocks and if you keep them at “1”, the ride quality is good. Anything higher than “1” and your in for a bumpy ride. I installed a set of Suspension Techniques Antiroll bars at the same time as the springs and now the rear end really sticks well. The car is truly neutral at its handling limits but the rear will step out if you let off the gas mid corner. Living in Canada and driving on the slippery roads in winter really gives you a chance to test these things.

Strength:

Comfortable, yet controlled ride. Great drop, even more than advertised.

Weakness:

Haven''t discovered any yet.

I''m probably so excited about this product because I had nowhere to go but up (actually down in this case) from where I was with the stock springs and shocks (I was getting nosebleeds from the excessive height of my car!!) I installed the springs with KYB AGX shocks. WOW!!! what a difference!! Actually, in the ride department, the difference is quite subtle (with the shocks on lowest setting), which is good, especially when the wife is in the car. The ride and bounce (or lack thereof) is MUCH more controlled. I haven''t done any real "testing" other than normal street driving, but it seems that the handling is vastly improved over stock as well. One of the most impressive things is the ride height. As others have said, the drop in the front was actually about 2.25 inches as opposed to the advertised 1.75. But the drop in back seems to be more like 1.5 instead of the 1.6 advertised. BUT, my car had an overly-excessive amount of wheel-well gap in front anyway, so the overall look after putting the H&R''s on is AWESOME!!! I put the rears on first, and was a little disapointed at the amount of drop, but after I let the last side down in the front, I was EXTREMELY and PLEASENTLY surprised. As a matter of fact, I could barely get the jack out from under the standard jacking location on the Civic. I had to literally slide it out sideways because of the lip on the jack cup. I was thinking, "cool!!! the jack is stuck, that''s got to be a good sign!!!" I think with the front lowered, it also made the back a bit lower too. So overall, the front IS a LITTLE bit lower than the back, but on the Civic, that looks good, and normal. It no longer looks like I''m pulling a perpetual wheelie! I hope/plan to do some autocross racing this year sometime, so I might give an update then. But until then, I recommend the H&R''s highly. They are an EXTREMELY high quality product, but VERY reasonably priced. Also, the guys at kingmotorsports are very nice, I also bought my AEM CAI there, as they have quite reasonable prices.

Get what you pay for. I think my cavities might come back because all of my fillings have been rattled out of my head.

I switched my E46 over to the Eibachs and it was night and day. You maintain ride quality and still increase preformance. When I bought the E-55 kit, Eibach didn''t make anything at the time, but I regret being impatient.
